Today I stumbled across a new (looks like February 2010) site called ModelURL. Effectively it competes with Model Mayhem and One Model Place. It even lets you import all your details and photos from those sites when you create a new profile. It appears to have about 4800 members currently. I must admit, having looked through the functionality for the last hour or so, I like it more than MM (for the ability to follow people with actually having to request friendship) but it doesn't have the comprehensive search functionality of OMP (yet). Anyway, just passing it on.

That's funny -- within a couple hours of this post, which had already led me to open the modelurl page up and poke around, I got an email from one of my contacts on MM who said they were leaving MM for modelurl! And sure enough, they already closed up their account on MM.

Just signed up myself; don't see anyone else in my area on there yet... They have an easy import tool that lets you pull in your profile from MM or OneModelPlace, so setting up your initial account is pretty easy.

Will be interesting to see where it goes.

Too weird, one of my friends sent me her new page there yesterday.

Same thing happened to me today. Seems kind of suspicious, or maybe I'm being too skeptical.

Took about one whole minute to set up, importing from my MM. The image display is much better at this one than on MM: Mine

Well certainly don't be suspicious of my post - I'm not that well connected.
Interesting to see that since posting the number of members has increased from 4800 to 5570. It's also interesting to see that they have 2883 agencies represented there also which I think will be a big draw for the models as they can promote themselves directly within the site.
I'm liking that there is no limit on the number of photos that can be uploaded (compared to MM and their 20 limit) and that all of your upload activity is logged in a Facebook-style so that Followers can see what you've been up to without having to spend extra time promoting every update.
Anyway, the community is still small but as cdrice says, it will be interesting to see what happens.

No Sam, I don't mean that, sorry if it came across that way. What I mean is that I wonder if the new site is generating these "I'm leaving MM for MURL" emails automatically to MM members.

What's really weird is that I canceled my MM account a week or so ago, and AFTER it was cancelled, I received the sitemail from a guy I don't remember, maybe I had friended at some point, saying "I'm leaving MM for MURL".

I agree with you that the MURL website looks great, I'd probably sign up with them even, except that they specifically say that they are a FASHION modeling website, while I want to network with people interested in Lifestyle modeling.

A little more research has led me to many more forum posts on MM and elsewhere with the same concerns. ModelURL might have some spammy supporters, or maybe not.

While reading, I also came across several references to Model Insider, which appears to be a rather mature and well-designed site... but like ModelURL, there does not apear to be many other folks (shooters, models or anyone else) signed up in my area. Dunno how useful either will be, but I set up accounts on both and will see where they go in the future, and if anyone else joins where I live...

I didn't know about this one. I guess this is the natural evolution of online social communities.

I was going to post something about this site as well. I too received an email about this site telling me that one of my firends was going over to the new site because it integrates with facebook and twitter.

Hmm. I just did too. From someone I never actually communicated with.

Yes, I got one too. I have a problem supporting (meaning joining) ModelURL if this is their tactic.

Looks interesting. I also noticed that there is a referral ID in the URL (?refId=4936). Does that help if I join via referral?

And the other thing I would be wary of is their integration with FaceBook. FB already has been having issues with keeping their member's info 'truly private'. There are just too many ways on FB where even an advanced user can inadvertently enable a feature/app that will then have pretty much all of their profile details.

Looks like this person is handling all the promotion activities.

Interesting...
I'm still following the progress of this site. It appears that the member total reached about 4500 before they decided to remove the member counter from the overview page.

Dont know much about this site, but it looks like an MM/OMP alternative:

//www.purestorm.com/

There is also modellocate.com

out of all of these sites, which ones do you guys have the best experiences with?

I am trying to break into the industry and network but there are so many sites out there, I want to establish myself on one.

So far, I like MM because there seems to be a lot of active users, ModelInsider.com because it looks pretty professional and modelurl.com because it has a nice interface and features.

For someone who is in the industry, would you suggest I join all of the sites?

One Model Place is the only one I've seen attending major Photography conferences so far.

I think OneModelPlace use to be the strongest in this arena, but MM seems to have taken a bit of their thunder in the last couple of years. I got a little irked when OMP starting referring to non-paying users as 'beginners'. MM can be frustrating, but it is the one site where I have had some level of success in finding local models. I'm curious why a few posters to this thread has left MM recently, is there something going on that I should be aware of?

ModelURL looks great, but I'm still trying to understand their motivation for building the site. The About page clearly states that they are focused on the fashion industry, but how many photographers and models actually work in fashion? But... they cannot spam me any more then WPPI has, so I'll give it a try. New profile is at //modelurl.com/nusbaum.

Mipoza.com is a great alternative to Model Mayhem. It allows you to have multiple portfolio types (Photographer and Model, etc.) It's not just for models and photographers, but more general creative professionals. It just started this week so it is still very new.

There are so many site like mm and omp in the net. One in particular that i came across recently is modxchange.com/. I was pretty impressed of the professionalism of layout of the site and also the members that are in the community. Created an account and surprisingly think the site is very neat. They have forums, job opportunities for their members, industry shoutouts, social media sharing tools, and many neat functions. What really caught my attention is how many magazines & modeling agencies are using their site. Looks like members are published every month on varies magazines on their site by just creating a portfolio. The site only requires that all member be professional.

I came across this forum and wanted to share a fashion website for creatives that surpasses modelmayhem and it\'s competitors. There are many web portfolio hosting sites in the web that make many promises, to only be disappointed or pay a large fee to join. I would recommend modxchange.com which is one of the fastest growing fashion networks that getting a lot of commotion. So far they have been very reputable and many talented people who were on mm and other sides are in their community. The site offers a wide range of tools that allows it\'s members to message other members, create groups where they can administer, post and seek jobs, create a portfolio, , build your network, promote your work, create albums, generate followers that see 100% of their post, and the list goes on. ModXchange's philosophy is simply, help by helping others. Basically as the site grows everyone within the community benefits from it.
