After getting a snapsnot comment on one of my current entries, I am looking for suggestions on how NOT to do a "snapshot" of a "skyscape". Is this just a fancy term for sunrise / sunset pictures? Are people going to be looking for shapes or textures? Color? B&W? I guess the voters will know what they like when they see it...

Take a peek here might help point you in the right direction!

Google "Storm Clouds" and look at the images ... many good ones here.

At what point does the landscape go from being a leading to a supporting role? That seems difficult to me.

Here are some images where the landscape is "supporting" rather than leading, in my opinion.

Agree? Disagree?
The 3rd one is the biggest stretch in my opinion, but I would argue that since the water is reflecting the sky, it is still supporting

Personally, I'd consider all these to be skyscapes...

Your mileage may vary...

Agree -- but then, I am always willing to stretch the box, if not escape it altogether ... if I could shoot any of these again, I wouldn't hesitate to enter them in this challenge:

... and maybe even

Really bummed about this one. The forecast says rain every day and night for the next week. Not just spot showers, full on rain for the whole week. And tomorrow's a new moon. I was going to try you know what for the first time, but obviously not in the rain.

I don't know if that's a problem. It's so sunny here there isn't a cloud to be seen. How do you create interest out of that?

Good point. If there's a break in the rain with good cloud definition, great, but I'm hesitant to point straight up into a shower. I do think, though, that this will get interesting.

Shoot at nautical twilight and get stars?

get a large umbrella and hold it over the camera, works for me everytime

A method I've used in a pinch for rain shooting is to get a plastic bag from wherever (grocery bags are a good size and seemingly damn everywhere), cut a circle in it around the size of your lens diameter (no need to be exact here).
Now, thread the bag through your lens hood, and put it on the end of your lens such that it goes beyond the bayonet thread a bit. Attach lens hood and push the bag back over the lens and body. The plastic is thin enough that you can keep your shooting hand on the outside of the bag, which holds it down, and your zoom/focus hand inside to adjust things. Just remember if your lens extends to leave a bit of slack for the front to extend.
Is it as good as a raincover? No, but its free, available practically everywhere, and takes 5 seconds.

I took a picture on the 6th at 4:55 before I even what the challenge was this week. It's strange to take a picture that satisfies the challenge before knowing what the challenge is.

When I first saw this challenge, I thought of this old shot of mine.

Travel.. It can't rain everywhere all the time, and the edge of storms are just about as good as it gets!

And I thought of this shot of mine which I enter in the July FS and received a comment that there was too much sky (for him) lol Guess it's too bad this was shot in July ;-)

The snapshot comment is meaningless. Ignore it. This is going to be a Photoshop challenge anyway.

Curse work. The sky was awesome today ranging from layer upon layer of dark moody cumulo-nimbus clouds to bright white to a sunset where the clouds opposite the sun where a great shade of gold, all puffy and big. The good news is I already have my Skyscape entry, but today would have been awesome to have been out shooting.

Looks good to me. The subject is reflected, so why not. People will give you the 50/50 judgement, but I like it.

I find this to be a very funny challenge. (In a good way.) I mean, we all have cool sky photos in our collections. We've all taken a great one. But this challenge isn't so much about us taking a great photo, it's about how kind mother nature's been to us on this exact week. And I can tell you she hasn't been kind to me.

Praying for clouds! This is what the sky at my house has looked like all week:

Clear blue sky. Great for hanging out, terrible for photographing.

Doesn't look like I'll have an entry this week :(

Agreed, though some forethought does help. We had unbelievable downpours on Wednesday (took everyone at least an extra 30 minutes to get to work) , but I also realized that if it breaks up, it will offer some very dramatic skies. So, I brought my camera with me and was rewarded when the storms broke up just before I left work. I was quite happy about it, but Jutilda was complaining that the storm had moved her way.

I don't need an actual storm, just a few white fluffy clouds would be more interesting than a big blue rectangle. :)
