Wow, really, we've never had a High Key Challenge?
I looked through the history and Nada.

Looking at the definition on this one... I actually like it.

Me too.

Yep, whoever drew up the tight description for this challenge - thank you. I'm completely outside my comfort zone with this, but if I can find enough time to practice I may give it a go; had the description been less tight I am sure I would have given it a wide berth.

I feel that tight descriptions are beneficial for the 'technique' based challenges, and completely unnecessary for the 'concept' based challenges.

Ahh, that explains it! I was convinced we did something like this recently.

Still, I'm a fan of the technical challenges, so this should be fun!

Yeah... considering high key tends to be low contrast, that could pose a bit of an issue.

I might not enter this for that reason.

Don't want to see these:

Too bright, can't see details.

I think it's not bright enough....

etc...

Well, my entry is in.
This is the earliest I have ever submitted a challenge entry.
But I was inspired and happened to have a lot of time on my hands, so I went for it.

Man, I hope it doesn't bomb. I like it, but this is my first try at high key

Anyone experienced with high key want to take a look at it? Generally I don't ask for advice unless I am choosing between two images, but since I am done so early I would have time to reshoot/reedit

I would be happy to give you my opinion on it if you want it.

A perfect time to learn. Generally, highkey is pretty easy to set up with artificial lighting... a tad difficult with natural.

Just a quick question...
Seeing as lighting is so important for this one - it means editing the exposure of it will also be important. If you guys have Photoshop do you also have View > Proof Setup > Working CMYK?
I see that changing it to the other settings seems to change the brightness of the pictures.
Which is the best setting or does it purely depend on what system / computer you are running it on?
Thanks

Before editing you should change the view to RGB (monitor/mac/pc/whatever). That's what will be displayed on monitors, so that's the view you should be working with when you're editing. If you were to do your work in CMYK-view, your image will appear washed out and flat once it's converted for web viewing.

Many times overexposed photos can work after a little tweaking in Photoshop or a similar software editing program.

Can we do smoke photography in this challenge?

Danger Danger, the above was very bad info. There are true pros on here that can lay it all out, but from what I've just learned, monitor RGB, Mac RGB and WIndows RGB are actually different. I have never been able to tell the difference, but apparently Windows is at 2.2 gama, where Mac is at 1.8. The Browser RGB just makes it up as it goes along. (Paraphrasing heavily from what I've just read.) Best bet is to set it to Windows RGB, regardless of what type of machine you're on.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, as I most likely am.

So, as a challenge to myself, I set out to shoot a high key photo using one light... in the dark. A single Vivtar 285HV. :)

IMO, I pulled it off. I'll just have to see what voters think.

Would have been easy to throw 4-5 lights at project.... but... that's boring :)

No, highkey doesn't have to be white on white... although it's probably a safe bet with the voters.
