So I have been hemming and hawing about finally buying a flash for my D300s and hadn't been able to decide between a SB900 (I've done lots of reading about the thermal cut-off issue), the SB800 (not sure I want to use 5 batteries) or a couple of used SB 600s just to get me going finally experimenting with the world of off camera flash. I have an old SB22s that I've played around with a little bit but am not quite sure how to get good results with it. NOW I read in Pop Photo the there is another option... the SB700! I picked up the Rocky Nook Nikon CLS guide and was hoping to learn about my next purchase, but can't seem to pull the trigger on any of them. Can anyone speak to the SB700's advantages over the other options out there?

The SB700 has the same thermal cutoff feature as the 900. It also has no PC port. This may or may not be of importance to you. I use two 900's and have only triggered the thermal shutoff when I was purposefully trying to. Keep in mind I don't shoot in really hot conditions generally, but overall have never had a problem. The 700 has the same awesome control interface as the 900 (rotating wheel + mode selector with a couple others). The 700 has a GN of 28 while the 900 has a GN of 40 (meters). GN measurements are usually crap to compare, but I'd compare them with two from the same vintage and same manufacturer. The 700 supports Ittl flash, as does the 900, 600, and 800. The 700 also has commander mode for other CLS flashes, so you can control multiple (2) groups from your one hotshoe mounted flash. The 700 MAY (but I haven't seen absolute verification... people correct me here if I'm wrong) have SU-4 mode, which is a dumb slave mode which is very useful and which I have used many times. The 900 and 800 also have commander and SU-4, but the 600 does not. Hypothetically, the 700 SHOULD have the SU-4 mode, but like I said, just not positive. If you aren't worried about Ittl, there are a couple other options. I've heard lots and lots of good things about the LP160, and it's backed by a warranty. Many like the Yongnuo 560, but I've heard some iffy reports on quality and I can't say they do or don't back up the product. Both will be manual only, but can be triggered in lots of different ways.
