I want an easy way to put photos together in a collage - just squares, say 4 x 4 or 5 x 5. I need a template, I think. How do you do it?

Picassa maybe?

You can really do this pretty easily with any photo editor which supports layers. I would just make a large Canvas the size of your finished project, and copy and paste each image onto its own layer, then scale and move as necessary.

I did that in photoshop and it made me crazy. It took a long time and making the in between spaces match was hard. I'm thinking there has to be download-able templates that could make this easy. What about the wedding album templates?

Try this... link

eta: I thought this was the one I used once, but it's not. Apparently you need to pay a subscription fee to actually print, but it's free to email or facebook. Anyway, I know there are free ones out there. Picasa does do a decent job as well.

Try using the guides next time in photoshop. They are vertical and horizontal lines you can pull in from the ruler (and move to any spacing you need). Then when placing or resizing each photo-square, they snap into place with the edge along the guide.

I use these to create background fill shapes as well, or ensure text stays lined up throughout the document.
Hope this helps!

Thank you! It's hard to ask a question when you don't quite know what you are looking for. Guides! That's just what I needed. That middle video tutorial has changed my life. Who knew? I always thought guides was a blue line that came down by accident sometimes to get in my way.

I have Adobe CS3...I was able to make guides work with both verticle and horizontal guides at 33% and 66% for helping with the "rule of thirds" but how do I make it so they show up on EVERY photo I'm editing?

Actually...what I'm looking for is a rule of third guide while using the crop tool.

CS5 has a crop guide overlay (rule of thirds grid) that does exactly THAT.
I don't know about earlier versions.

cf/x makes an app called Collage which does this sort of thing automatically if you get tired of the manual work. And Kubota has an action called Auto Album for automatic layouts.

If you decide not to limit yourself to squares or perhaps rectangles, and just go with the size of your images,
here are some examples of collages that know no rules. Well, except to use a background
that binds the images together in some sort of theme. If you get holes, use the holes for titles.
Some used defined edges, others used diffused edges to make images flow together.
Yes, it's a little 'work' but it does give you an idea of where your images are when you use layers
to assemble the collage. And that is good practice.
