I may have enough bread to purchase a D700. I would sell my D90 for some of the smack.

Check my lens profile. I have the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED as well as the 70-200 f/2.8.

If I used these lenses, will I get all the benefit of the full frame sensor? Or is there some other high end lens I would need to purchase?

Thanks,

KS

The two lenses you mention are high end glass. They will work perfectly on the D700. You will be able to use DX glass but you cut down to about 6mp. The only lens you should get rid of is the 18-70mm as its a DX lens.

So with my current lens I'll be using all the pixels?

I use those two lenses with my D700 and I love them both, particularly the 24-70, it's practically glued to the camera!

Well, if my quick scan of Nikkor lenses is right, both your lenses will work fine as they are FX lenses, so designed for FF.

Yes you'll be using the full pixel power of the camera with everything except the 18-70.

Great thanks....oh...the 18-70 is gone. I'll have to delete !

What a set-up that'll be. Now all you need is the 14-24mm 2.8 to complete the holy trinity.

Also a great companion to the D700, though I'm always scared when I'm using it due to that huge bulbous front element that you can't protect!

Yeah, that's a worry. I've got the Sigma 12-24mm, which has the same problem. I honestly replace the lens cap if I can't immediately spot the next shot.

I set it back to 24mm after each shot so it draws it back a little into the hood.

Lenses are a lot tougher than you give them credit for. You didn't buy them to sit in the bag, take them out and let them play! I've got the 14-24 and yeah it sticks out a bit, but no worries here, just let it go!

To all the people worried about their lenses, you should visit a site called www.stuckincustoms.com. It's a pro photographer named Trey Ratcliff's blog. He's an HDR guru. Anyway, he has a little video about what is all in his bag and he explains how he doesn't bother using lens caps or uv filters. It's kinda funny actually but it made me feel a lot better about my lenses. I still use uv filters and lens caps but I'm not as skiddish or paranoid anymore.

Also, it's just a damn good site, he seems like a down to earth guy and has a good sense of humor.

Thanks all....

I won't be able to grab that wide angle for some time !

Thanks for the lens/FX info. Moves the purchase of the D700 up a few notches on the "get the balls to pull the trigger ladder" !

Your post say that you have the 70-200 F/2.8, but your profile say 80-200 F/2.8... as I don't have the latter, I can only advice on the first: If it's the first model you have (VR), you'll get a significant amount of vignetting when it's wide open. This is fixed in the new version (VR II) of the lens.

Just a heads up :)

I was just going to bring this up, the difference in the older lenses and the newer ones is pretty significant. The 70-200VR2 plain rocks on the D700.

5000 ISO wide open during an assignment on Saturday night.

Sorry...it is the 80-200 non-vr

I can sell this one if it is going to give me trouble.

ISO 5000 ? Did you clean noise out or is that out of the cam?

That has my normal work flow done to it, which would include a pass through Noise Ninja with defaults except noise reduction is turned down from standard of 10 to 6. This ran in the paper, I also had another image from the same set run front page at 5x7, they cropped it from the already cropped original file and it looks awesome.

Nice shots Matt....

Hey look at this BS. A friend emailed me last night when i told him I was looking for a D700. He sent me the link:

What a load !

It is to an ebay store. Seller has great feedback. Has several D700s at no reserve with about a day to go. However, when looking closer and at different item #s I found that he is using the same photos to sell several "different' cameras. He even has "quotes" from the seller like..."I only used this indoors" etc...

Check it out....I'm not sure how this "company" pulls it off....surely in China...but what about the feedback?

I prefer to buy from reputable sources. My D700 and lenses came from B&H. I bought the 300MM and D3s from online photographers who are friends. I don't take chances with thousands of dollars on Fleabay. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Even if it does sell for 2grand...likely stolen...LOL.

I get 99% of my stuff from BH. However a local cam shop that has been around for 30 years has the same price on the d700. I'll decide if I want to pay Louisiana tax or not !

When I bought all of mine they had the rebates going. I save around $1k by buying the camera body and lenses together. The D700 price has gone up from $2399 when I bought mine to $2699 now since the Quake and Tsunami. But it's worth it in my opinion.

03/23/2011 09:35:39 PM · #24
I bought mine from Amazon just a few weeks ago and got a good deal in my opinion. I got the D700 and the 28-300 VR lens for $3032, both brand new USA models with warranty.

I decided on the 28-300 lens because it will be the only lens I will have for a while and wanted a good all around versatile lens. I made the right choice IMHO.
