I found a place (Took ages) that rents camera gear. It's not easy to actually rent the gear though, a bit of a pain to start things up. Still, it might be a good way of playing with stuff for a couple of days and then deciding whether I want it or not. Anyone with experience renting?

The Canon 17-40 f/4l is an amazing lens, very happy with it.

I also have the 50mm 1.4 which is superb, have you considered checking that one out as well as the 1.2?

Lensrentals.com is a great place to rent and also provides helpful reviews of each lens it rents. I've rented twice and have been very satisfied.

Rented a supertelephoto from a camera store a year or so ago. First, in order to get the weekend rate of $40 for 3 days, I had to some 70 km into downtown Ottawa, each way, and pick it up after 3 pm but before 5pm Friday. Then had to return it before 11:30 Monday morning....grr...so you'd think that the camera store would actually BOTHER to upkeep its lenses and at least inspect them before/after renting? Do you think that they might uhmmm actualy CLEAN the lenses before you rented them?

NO!! and NO!!!!!! The lens I got was sticky to zoom out, it was incredibly filthy at both front and rear lens elements, overall it was just such a grotty experience I am not eager to replicate it.

having said that though, I am 2nd camera at my first wedding this fall and don't have the $$ to outright buy a new f2.8 70-200mm...so I'll probably have to *ugh* rent one...maybe from the OTHER camera store this time.

Love www.lensrentals.com It's a great site. We have rented from their twice and been very happy both times. I researched a lot of places and this site rose to the top. Then they kept us with their great service. Love them!

I'm in Japan so things aren't as easy unfortunately. A lot of the shops are based in Tokyo (I'm far away from Tokyo) and when I talked to one of the major renters they said I had to go in and apply because 'by law' they aren't able to use credit cards to hold a deposit. I'm not sure if this is true or not but that's why we have to go in and apply. I need to find something in the Kansai area.

Here is a crazy idea that might just work out for you.

This shop //www.camera-no-ohbayashi.co.jp/used/index.html
is just 2-3 minutes walk from yodobashi umeda. Go there and talk to them. They have lots of used lenses and they are usually in very good shape. (I have bought some lenses from them and always they were in mint condition). Talk to them that you only need it for a day or two, so whether they would rent one of their lenses (used ones) up for selling. Owner seems to be nice guy, he just might agree to it.

Other than that , there is a shop near my house, if I go there will talk to them if they rent lenses or do they know anyone who rents.

Good luck.

Ya know, if you ask one lanky redheaded fella if you can borrow his Canon camera, I know another rather chubby redheaded (OK mostly grey) fella that would lend you a f2.8 70-200... unless your wedding is in October, then all bets are off cause that second fella is off to New Zealand and Australia.

I used to rent all the time when I worked in LA, it helped that the film lab where I worked was literally, next door to the rental house. As a consequence, they waived the deposit requirement.
