Has anyone been out shooting in the SW part of the state...Yankee Boy, American Basin, Ice Lakes, etc or around the Crested Butte area? I was planning on heading down this week but I'm wondering if I should hold off a week or two for more of the snow to melt. I hiked to Black Lake in RMNP this weekend and saw 1 paintbrush and crossed 1/2 mile of snowfields to get to the lake. Any reports would be appreciated.

Go now. In spite of the snow in some areas, the meadows are peaking in beauty now. My estimate is that by August 1, the wildflower season will be past prime.

Sorry, haven't been down that way, yet. Looks like still some snow. Here are some reports from 14ers.com

I was also in RMNP this weekend. Tried to get to Lake of Glass and Sky Pond, but all sorts of snowed scared off my group.

Best hike for wildflowers and scenery in RMNP now is the first two miles of the Ute Trail, from Trail Ridge Road. (This is the part of the Ute Trail which departs to the South from EAST of Forest Canyon Overlook.

Reminds me of the current cover photo and story of this months Popular Photography. It's titled "Another Chance at Spring" and it's about still having an opportunity to capture wild flowers at Mount Rainier in Washington state.

I imagine it also applies to the high elevations of Colorado.

Yes, best wildflowers in July I've ever seen in Northern Colorado. Not that this is a great wildflower photo, but the opportunity for great foregrounds exists.

Beautiful foregrounds indeed. A nice compliment to the beautiful mountains in the background.

I appreciate everyone's info. For anyone who is interested...I talked to the Silverton Chamber of Commerce today and they said American Basin is probably about a week out. A friend hiked Ice Lake up Mineral Creek on Saturday and said the marsh marigolds are out but nothing else. The very nice lady by the name of Mary at the Ouray Chamber of Commerce said Yankee Boy is way out. She said Imogene Pass isn't even open yet. She also said they got a significant hail storm in the high country on Sunday afternoon so it probably set it back some.
