I'm a serious beginner photographer and am hoping to upgrade from my Rebel XSi. Should I head for the t2i or 60d? Here are a few example pics from my portfolio to show my style/level of photography...

Any tips?

The controls are slightly different in the Rebel series compared to the ##D series cameras. Going to a camera store and seeing if the 60D has a natural feel to it for you.

Other than that I'd suggest doing a feature by feature comparison over at dpreview.com and decide what features are important to you.

I agree with Colette about trying them out in a store and see how they 'feel' to you. I have a T2i and a 40D. The rebel series cameras have come a long way with their improved technology but the xxD series have a better feel and better controls to me. So if I were to choose, I would say, buy a 7D ;-). Better technology (slightly) than the 60D in the bigger more solid body than the T2i. Price is always an issue, but if your budget allows, go for the better camera. Just my $.02 Hope it helps.

Thanks for the thoughts. Unfortunately, the 60d in Best Buy seems to be a bit faulty or something. I can't seem to auto focus in TV/AV/M mode by just pressing the shutter button halfway (it will focus in auto mode and such)---??? Is that a malfunction or something I should get used to in the XXd series?

The 7d looks great, but yes, it's expensive! I think I will go with the 60d, and hope it will be sturdier than my XSi. BTW, is the 60d somewhat weatherproof?

All canons are the same, get a canon.

The auto focus may be off on the lens or if you are using Live View, it won't auto focus. The 60D is more weather proof than the Rebel series of Cameras.

The 60D might be slightly more weather resistant, but none of those cameras are weather proof.

You might find this thread useful: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=1087447.

Does your T2i still work well? You might actually get more satisfaction from investing in a new lens as opposed to upgrading the body.

I have an XSi (it works well), and one of the main reasons I would like a better camera is for making some bigger prints (lots of other reasons too). And yes, I'm very excited to say I purchased a 10-22mm canon lens which gave a very noticeable boost to my image quality. I can't say I could afford any more higher grade lenses at this point...

Looking at this from another angle... I love the bigger feel of the 60d (controls are definitely something to get used to). Is this an advantage when put on a tripod (less vibration), or will it in effect be 'swaying' from its weight? If I upgrade, will I need a sturdier tripod?

BTW, thanks for the link...

i was in the same boat a few months ago.

i'll state it simply, get the 60D. the only thing the t2i will really offer you over your XS is image quality and even that will be marginal. if you want better pictures buy better lenses instead of upgrading your body. The 60d would be a woth while upgrade becuase you get the same IQ of the T2i plus better AF, higher burst rates and swivel lcd and a better build, but most important is the pro style layout. you will find it much easier to apply settings with he top lcd and dedicated buttons and the rear dial, as opposed to digging through the menus. it also just feels like a solid camera, not saying the t2i isnt, but its just feels more solid and better in your hand than a rebel.

Yeah I was trying to help a friend who has a T2i and the controls/display menu was driving me nuts! Yuck.

Oops, I meant XSi but glanced at the poster above me and typed T2i instead.

How big are the prints you are looking to get? I've had several 11x14 prints made from shots taken with my old 300D (6.3 MP) and they look great.

I should say that after owning it for just over a week I am very satisfied with my 60D.

I'll bet the 60D was set to aiservo focus. With that setting, it won't beep to indicate a focus lock in any creative mode and will continuously hunt. When you switch the camera to Auto (or CA), servo is disabled and focusing "works" again.

or someone played with the custom functions. the AF works in all modes with the AF pressed halfway

Autofocus does, but aiservo focus does not (at least on my 7D). In any creative mode, aiservo will hunt for things to track and there is no beep to indicate focus lock. Switching to Auto or CA disables the servo mode and uses aifocus instead.

In response to DomD, the prints would be anywhere from 4"X6" to 30"X45". I can't say exactly, but something like that...

Well, I tried everything in Best Buy on that camera (it wasn't on aiservo). I should mention that it WOULD focus in TV/AV/M mode IF you pressed that * up at the top right of the body (should have mentioned that earlier). I'm glad to hear all 60d's don't have that as an only option. That would have been hard to get used to!

Glass, Glass, Glass. Save your money, keep the body you have and get pro glass. I wasted a lot of money looking back chasing from body to body, though I know it's important to have a nice body that does what you need it to you have beautiful photographs. GLASS will make them clearer, sharper, and enable you to change your settings less and take advantage of wider apertures, angles, etc...

I would recommend going for the glass :)

Good luck and have fun with whatever you do end up getting!

+1, my 70-200mm f4 has been the best purchase I made! But then I do like my T2i. If I ever feel a need to lag some heavy stuff around (and have enough spare cash) I would go for 5D MkII :) I would by-pass 60D.

Wow, this gives me a lot to think about... Hmmm. Tell me if I'm wrong, but my line of reasoning is, "I just got a decent wide-angle lens, I'm fairly satisfied with my other few lenses, I'm itching for better resolution, higher ISO capabilities, etc., soooo..." Canon 60d here I come? Sigh...

My decision doesn't have to be at all soon---that's a relief!

If it's just the resolution and high ISO your looking for I would go with the T2i. I looked a lot between the two and the only big bonuses with the 60d were things I didn't care as much about. Namely build quality, burst speed, and flip out screen. Most people like the way the 60d feels in your hands, but I personally liked the lighter T2i. I also like that I can switch from AV to TV with one hand because the dial is on the same side. Useful when I'm holding my infant in one hand and trying to take pictures of my daughter with the other :)

In the end they are both amazing cameras and you will be happy with either.

UPDATE---Well, mike_311 guessed right. I reset/cleared custom functions and the AF worked...

I know this will disappoint some, but I'm heavily leaning toward the 60d. After doing tons of comparing, even seriously considering a 50d or a 7d, it seems the 60d will meet my needs for a good while. I'm thinking, "Obviously the 7d is the biggest/baddest. BUT, how about get the 60d, and save that extra $$ for lenses like many of you suggested (it would be sort of a compromise). LATER, when I REALLY need those extra bonuses of even perhaps a 5d Mark II, I'll have that 'extra $$' I would have spent on the 7d."

That probably didn't come out making sense, but I'm satisfied with the logic... ;)

I'll keep you posted (yeah right---like you're really interested...). Thanks for the ideas!

WOW.. I Have been a member for a year and this is first time i was right on anything...

you will love the 60d. the batter life is amazing, i can fill up a 16gb card and still have over half the battery left. the swivel screen is something i scoffed at but its so nice not to have to lay on the ground to composed shots. i definitely use it more than i ever expected to. plus i dont think i could ever go back to the rebel layout now, im so used to having dedicated button for everything.

good luck.

Yipeeeee!!! The 60d arrived today. I took a bit of time just to play around with it, and boy is it fun! I haven't extensively tested it out, but it looks real good, and seems to be what I was expecting...

I have a 55-250mm canon lens, and it being paired with the 60d yields incredible images. Sharp as can be. I can't imagine what an expensive L lens might do. Also, the low light capability is surprising, at least to me. I'm still a tad bit nervous about the swivel screen, but am sure that good, special care will prevent any damage... One noticeable difference between the 60d and my XSi is the viewfinder. The 60d gives a significantly larger view through the lens, giving opportunity for attention to small details in the frame.

Anyways, a lot to look forward to---a lot to learn. This looks like a great camera!

L lenses hamper your ability to buy anything less.
