so, my uncle is an author and magazine writer and needs a new camera to take with him on his motorbiking/writing trips so that he can take photos for his articles.

he has asked me for recommendations for the best p&s for him - ie something compact that takes brilliant pictures.

i have NO CLUE when it comes to point and shoots and so i come to you, oh great photography hivemind.

im going googling myself and looking through reviews on dpreview but there seems to be such a glut of these little guys now and they all seem to do a pretty decent job... narrowing down my selections for him with some personal opinions would help!

First thing you need to do is determine your price range.

After that you can narrow it down a bit from there.

he doesnt really have one, which is a problem with him that i often tear my hair out over!

he will be willing to pay more for a better camera, without even thinking twice.

so if i said i had a budget of $300.... but there was a smashing one for $600 he would probably buy it, hahah

but for convenience lets say middle of the range? is that about 200-300 for a p&s? all i drool over is slr/dslr stuff so i have no concept even of what the market is like right now for the little guys...

I have a friend who has a Leica M9. He just returned from an Alaska tour with magnificent images. It is compact and captures brilliant images. Not in the mentioned price range, but it would be a grand solution.

I thought about recommending this but I figured the price would not be too pleasing. From what I hear that is one of (if not) the best compacts on the market as of right now.

now if only i could figure out how to get him to buy that leica for ME... hell, i will take a film version!

yeah thats probably a bit over what he was looking... I am going to suggest it so he knows whats out there but i doubt he will be jumping on it! i sent him the link to the nikon though, i think thats far closer to what he is looking for, just a great all rounder.

he mentioned ILC's to me mike and i had a look into those... he was balking a little bit about having to carry extra lenses/change them etc. he used to ride with an old minolta slr and transparency film, so he is not unfamiliar with cameras, he just would prefer something that is a lot more convenient these days (i think).

I love the retro look! But it is not exactly compact - it weighs the same as my Rebel (with 50mm lens ;)

Just helped a friend pick a P&S for a similar purpose...

Canon G12, Panasonic Lumix LX5, Canon S95, Leica D-Lux (4 or something?)

Micro cameras from olympus and sony or others are small, but add the lens and they are not small anymore. And we all know its all about the lenses ;)

I have Canon S95, a great little P&S camera. Extremely compact. G12 is a bigger heavier version of S95.

You mentioned P & S but what about something like the Olympus Pen or other micro 4/3 system. Certainly more expensive than a P&S but more versatile.

Those are the top dogs in P&S cameras. The Leica (and Fuji Finepix X100) are over $1000. You can get the S95 for $359 shipped HERE.

The Olympus XZ-1 is in the same league as the Lumix LX5 and the Canon S95. It also has a F1.8 aperture at the wide end (28mm equiv) and f2.5 at the long end (112mm equiv). Great JPEG output, too.

<------ What? No love for the Samsung WB2000? The average DPC score for shots entered off this P&S is 6.42 !

What does uncle know about photography? Does he want manual controls or does he just want a reliable automatic setting? Does he want or need zoom? Or macro? Low light? Image quality/size of sensor? There are all kinds of USER reasons to prefer one over another.

If I were to get another P&S, I would second the Canon S95. $369 at B&H.

Just to add to the confusion, I was looking at this Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3. Don't know that much about it except for the description, but like it for its "weather proofing". Maybe a consideration for rides in inclement weather(???) Just throwing it out there...

Yeah, the pana TS3 won the dpreview top rating for current waterproof/rugged cameras. Prolly great on the motorbike. The second top rated one was not nearly so weather/waterproof or rugged but smaller and more stylish, always so important when one is journalist on a motorbike, except the downside is that you have to set some stuff manually, and that's not so neat on the motorbike or getting the scoop.

Really best to ask the people who rely totally on p and s's; dpc'rs are bound to insist on some kind of manual fiddling somewhere.

Why not just use an iPhone? ;o)

My vote for the Canon S95 - very compact so I have it permanently in my pocket. Takes great photos too - and no doubt even better when you know what you are doing with it:)
