In the 'Challenges Open for Submission' section of the homepage, link directly to the thread discussing the challenge pre-voting.

e.g.

Lens Flare · Advanced Editing
Photograph a natural lens flare.
4 days and 16 hours left · 14 entries received
Enter this challenge
Discussion thread

Do the same for the 'Challenges Needing Your Votes', but link to the scores thread for each challenge.

The discussion and scores threads (sometimes more than one) are created by members, not by the site.

To make your suggestion effective there would have to be automatically-generated threads, as is now done with the outtakes threads, and people would have to use those and not create their own.

Yes, the big disadvantage of this is for it to be fully automated you'll lose the humorous thread titles - (either that, or come up with some way for the thread creator to link back to the challenge section, but that would be overly complex) - Or perhaps automate with a 'boring' thread title but allow the thread title to be changed to something more interesting afterwards.

The advantages are that it would make it easier to find the correct thread to post in (only one click away), it would make these threads more visible, and it would encourage more participation in the scores discussion threads.

A link to the challenge suggestion thread might be easy coz it exists before the challenge is announced. But that would only work for suggested challenges.

For non-suggested challenges, i think its ok to automate the creation of the thread with a boring title as most challenge discussion threads simply use the cuurent challenge's title anyway.

As for the scores thread, the one with interesting titles, a simple approach would be:
a link to the thread if someone has created it; or
a link to create the thread if no one has created it yet.

If two or more users click on the create button, first to submit wins. Everyone else gets a message saying they are too slow.

And if the challenge is a sequel, a link to the previous challenge of the same name should also be added. Like the current female portrait II challenge. It took me a while to find the first female portrait challenge.
