So now all the abstract haters will be struggling to produce a high scoring abstract. Or staying out of this one.

ok, ok... i'm going to ask what i am sure will be answered by "don't take the challenge description too literal", but here goes...

the challenge description states

"Abstracts are about lines, shapes and colors. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract." [emphasis mine]

so, looking back at the previous Abstract challenges (excluding the puzzle macros), many of the top placers seem to me to be recognizable objects (eg., staircases, smoke, buildings), just photographed in interesting ways.

so, what gives?!

From the suggestion thread:

I agree with you 100%!! There are many beautiful architecture abstracts where I can tell what the object is but it's still an abstract. Abstract doesn't mean unrecognizable.

I was just looking to see if there was already a thread started where I could express that same opinion.

Here's a fantastic example of an abstract by Ursula in which the subject is recognizable.

To whoever wrote the challenge description: Convince me that this isn't an abstract...and a great example of an abstract as well.

I was just thinking myself that that was an awful definition of abstract.

All the abstract challenges of the last had this description. Can we agree to ignore it once more?
09/20/2011 05:59:13 PM · #10
Just because you can recognize the subject, doesn't mean it's not abstract IMO.

Look at three amigos front page, and look at the full description. Few voters read the full description, and fewer still will vote down a beautiful image that misses the challenge, relative to a less lovely image that fulfills all the requirements. Read the challenge title, and only use the explanatory wording as a guide if you need it; most voters will not use it to guide their votes.

And then you have me.. I'll slap a 3 on a beautiful shot if it doesn't indicate a clear understanding of, and compliance to, the challenge description....

I suppose that's because I can't stand people who cannot be bothered to read and understand the requirements. I am, however, in the minority.

As am I, but like most minorities in a popular vote, I do not expect my vote to carry the day often.

Anything abstract!
It would be fun to see what people do with this.

That was my suggestion for the challenge topic. Simple as that.

"If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract." Okay, so that's written into the description, but something that is recognizable to me may not be to you, especially if I present it as an abstract.
Or something abstract that I show you may look like something you think you recognize. Who knows?

Just do it.

Truthfully, I just dislike it when people disregard challenge topics...

In this case, I'm much more likely than usual to disregard them when voting, as I don't agree 100% that it should be unrecognizable, but rather, at least difficult to recognize... *shrug*

Ya Cory, what is the idea of reading the full challenge rules and using them to inform your voting? Sheesh. It is much better to pretend they are all free studies.

+1 and this is way it's called a challenge. Read the description and try to come up with a creative shot which meets it.....4's for every shot I can figure out what it is...(with in reason)..Lol

edit: I haven't given 1-3 votes for years, just trying to make a point, 4's will be the DNMC score.... :-)

People whine when the challenge description is ambiguous! This time the challenge description is quite clear so I will vote according to the description.

We all have our idea of what abstract is and it's easy to shoot an abstract but much harder to shoot something that is unrecognizable.

Mine is VERY recognizable to me, but then I was there when I shot it.
