...for registered users is not that it's one, but because it's weird. Come on, Pareidolia?!?! So I should spent whole day looking at clouds trying to find a face? At least since you have shortened the choice of entering a challenge from two to one, make the themes for the challenges more "for the wast masses". I haven't entered a single challenge in 2011 because of the weird ideas.

Become a member,for more choice.

Having just one option has certainly reduced the number of times I've entered a challenge since the change. It has also reduced my opportunities to vote (I won't vote on challenges I've entered) but as I'm only here for the fun of it, it really doesn't matter that much to me.

As Tiny says, you may have found the argument for you to become a paid member.

Others will complain that the challenges have not been creative enough and that this one is a nice change of pace. It's not just clouds, however. Try looking for images in other things, patterns of wear and peeling paint, stains on the sidewalk. Shadows on the wall. Might have been a better choice for a member challenge, though.

I understand your point, and even agree to a degree.

But the trouble many photographers have is not mastery of equipment or post processing. Rather, it is in finding great subjects. They look, but they do not see. I am finding that this challenge in particular has forced me to look and see more, before I ever touch the shutter release. You could call it lame, because you spent a day without shooting much ... or you could consider it exercise of some rarely used mental muscles.

Digital makes it easy to shoot a thousand frames and hope something interesting is in there somewhere. It encourages us to look, without training us to see. Film was expensive, with a limited number of photos possible, and delayed gratification while it was processed, printed and returned. It taught us to see before we fire. I think this challenge would be easier for photographers who have shot a lot of film in a prior life. Also easier for photographers who make their photos rather than just taking them.

Just a POV.

I said the multiple choices aren't the real problem, the problem is with the themes. I'm still going to enter only one challenge at the end. And I've seen a lot of debates in the past months about only challenge for registered users, and the only "smart" thing that the paid members could say was "become a member, you get more choices". I guess the moderators and owners of this site can thank you for your word of mouth i.e. free commercial. So stop doing that. It's your thing that you've decided to become a member, and it's my thing to decide weather or not I'm willing to pay for the extra options. I've been registered user since 2007 so I'm pretty much aware of the many possibilities of becoming a member. So in conclusion I don't even know why you bothered to waste 30 seconds to write that.

As for the others thank you for the more explained opinions. I guess some will say that challenges like "Black & White" "Portait" and other basic are plain and boring. You have right about that. But hey, we registered users should be grateful that we can enter and compete in such a good site for photography and since they've taken away the 2 choices of entering, I don't mind if they make the themes, for the only challenge, plain and simple. As someone said maybe its better the more interesting and challenging themes to be for paid members only.

Why not try to shoot something you normally don't focus on?? (Pun intended)

If you find the challenge themes weird please suggest some that you like.

I think one of the benefits of shooting themes that seem weird is that it moves you from your comfort zone. There are several themes I did not like when I first read that I have ended up having fun with.

There's a reason it's called a "challenge" ... :-)

If you don't like the challenges, start posting up challenge suggestions. The challenges you are not finding worthwhile have been put forward by others, make your voice heard.
