Total Lunar Eclipse 2011 Dec 10

Lunar Eclipse this Saturday

For me, total lunar eclipse occurs at moonset. I'll be blocked by the mountains of the continental divide. I'll see if I can find a viewing spot.

I wonder if I can manage waking up that early.

Sigh... It's only in the west. We're out of luck here in the east. :(

We're going to miss this one here on the east coast US. We had an excellent view of the one in Feb 08, and have seen others over the years, so it's not a big disappointment.

It might be worth the effort. When one gets to my age, one starts whispering to oneself, "I can sleep when I'm dead."

Northern Colorado's weather forecast is spectacular for Saturday early am. (CAVU and mild temps with no wind) At this moment, I plan to drive the 75 miles to the Poudre Canyon and Cameron Pass high point. From there, I can see forever. (or, at least to the western horizon where the moon will set in full lunar eclipse mode.) It's a plan. What sometimes happens when I make a little trip like this is.... serendipity happens for unexpected photo subjects.

Posted this other article a few days ago ... there's an extra bonus this time ...

If you click on the map linked in the article you will see an animated movie of how the event should look from your location, and even better there are links to free software to create such animations yourself.

Thanks for that link. I missed it the other day. Much appreciated.
Like I said above, the weather forecast is optimal. And, if we have clear air, the situation may be very photogenic. From Cameron Pass in northern Colorado, the 1.0000 full moon in full lunar eclipse will set at 7:10 AM at 298.6 degrees E of N. The sun will rise 10 minutes later at 7:20 AM at 120.3 degrees E of N. In theory, the full lunar eclipse will occur as the moon sets during the time of morning when the earth's shadow adds drama. For those who know the area, I'll shoot towards Walden, CO and Rabbit Ears pass. I'm excited about this opportunity. Just have to get there and take a snapshot, or two.

You are welcome -- I look forward to seeing your pictures. Unfortunately, the long-range forecast around here is for deteriorating weather ... :-(

Going to try and see if I can view it, as long as it is NOT foggy here!! Typically it is these days..

Just in case no one responds on another forum, what is the best setting to use on the camera to get the red/lunar eclipse?

Just peeked outside now, clear and bright. The F O G better not ruin it when the time is right

Guess folks are sleeping...no response, so I'm off to bed now before waking up again to view..

I got some decent shots of the eclipse back in Dec 2010, and I had my camera set on 1.3 sec, ISO 640, f/5. I think the redness will be somewhat dependent on the atmospheric conditions in your part of the world, but I think I had my WB set to cloudy and got some nice red tones.
