Tilt Shift I
12/21/2011 02:25:26 AM · #2
I am a bit confused about this challenge - does it mean that extensive blurs are allowed in Advanced Editing? From the previous challenge I have concluded that to achieve the Tilt & Shift look you take a suitable normal photo and then blur out top third and bottom third - am I right?

There's tutorials scattered about. I found a DPC thread that had a link to this site: //www.tiltshiftphotography.net/

Margaret, too bad.. This is the perfect challenge for a lensbaby shot but you've just parted with your lensbaby.

General comment: I hope this won't end up being a challenge where everyone seems to think it *must* simulate a miniature scene, which is my take on what happened in Tilt Shift I.

I hope we get some shifted photos, not just faux-tilted, there are a lot of creative possibilities there! This is one photo that comes to mind //1x.com/#!/photo/39507. Sadly I'm too poor to enter this challenge with an image I'd be happy with :<.

Great suggestion. Lensbaby week.

I almost own a page with my T/S lens, but not sure if any one of them would score great in this challenge.

What tilt shift is used for and why they are great lenses and what this challenge is are two very different things.

True use of a TS lens.

Yep, you just know there will be some low dnmc votes for any architecture shots :<.

Unfortunate, but probably true.

I never took a decent shot with it. But it would be great if you or Robert won a ribbon with it! :)

Snapseed TiltShift. Another example.

I was going to skip this challenge. But then, I discovered I had Snapseed and a TiltShift filter on my iPhone.

Otherwise, I have PTLens, which is real digital tilt-shift, like one would have with a large format camera with bellows. But, straightening up and aligning tall trees or tall buildings would be not understood by voters here. (well, not appreciated as meeting the challenge.)

my take is this challenge is using a T/S lens (or fake it in pp) to create that miniature scene look... this photo is amazing and beautiful, but i would say not fitting the sense of the challenge

p.s. otherwise, how are the voters to even know what lens was used other than the honor system? could the above image been taken WITHOUT a T/S lens?

I think you are correct overall.

I'm no longer going with a similar tree shot in this challenge, but my Weston Challenge image was a product of PTLens.
But, I don't think most voters would recognize this as a tilt-shift lens correction. Am I wrong? So, for me, it will be a miniature scene look. When I vote in this challenge, I will reward both types of tilt-shift look..... both real and pp.

That just makes me want to try and do it with a "straight" architecture shot -- why shouldn't we "challenge" the voters to learn something from their voting experience ... besides, I've done the fake miniature thing before anyway.

Agreed.
I definitely think this challenge is about selective focus or miniatures.

The challenge description explains what tilt shift is, but does not mention perspective control:
Tilt-shift photography refers to the use of camera movements, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene.

Reminds me of George Winston's "December" album. Nice!

Tilt-shift photography refers to the use of camera movements, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. Use this technique while shooting and processing your entry this week.

I think that the use of qualifying words means that the use of real tilt-shift lens should be welcomed and respected. I won't be penalizing anyone in voting if they use the real thing.

this challenge is, well, REALLY challenging, esp getting the right shot to play with... i even got questioned by a state trooper b/c i had pulled over along the highway and was out of my car trying to get a shot... luckily he didn't slap me with the $150 dollar traffice ticket!

don't have PS, so getting the photo processed is also more difficult. but i'm "learning" something new, so that's good ;-)
