Ok I've never done this before. But if you read the comments, a few have stated that this should of done better, and one even said it should've ribboned, ( I don't agree) there were better images than mine, but I do appreciate him saying that. But I just want to know those who gave me 4 and under WHY? Wasn't there enough little people in the image, or was it just boring.

I think it is a gorgeous shot and I wouldn't change a thing. As to why it didn't score higher... I think it is because of the challenge and voters were looking for shots that look like a miniature where this one looks like creative use of blur but not necessarily a miniature scene. Still a shot to be proud of and I gotta say it has been a pleasure watching you evolve your style. Your work is very nice to look at.

I wish I knew. He looks like a miniature to me.

I think the effect didn't work properly. As you have blur not only behind and in front of the surfer, but also to the left and right, it feels more like a lensbaby or something like that, rather than a tilt shift.

The shot itself wasn't boring, I liked it, and I think in another challenge it may have done better.

BTW, I didn't vote on this challenge, if I had I would probably have given it a 6.

i agree, i scored it a 6, its a nice but the blur is too over powering and my eye is fighting to stay on the surfer, my eye wants to look at the blur. Use the blur to focus your eye to the surfer or change the perspective, try to redo it. maybe add a bit of motion to the blur.

Well, NONE of the images that scored well used a "shift" component; every single one of them used "tilt", or rather a photoshopped version of same. And Lensbaby is, by FAR, the most-owned "tilt" lens in DPC. And make no mistake about it, it IS a "tilt lens", the most radical one available.

That's what's so frustrating about these "tilt/shift" challenges: they ought to just be CALLED "miniaturization" and then at least nobody'll be tempted to use an actual tilt lens in the manner in which it was designed to be used. As far as I can see, I led the charge for non-miniature, Lensbaby shots with my mid-20's finish. Sigh...

NOPE: on review, Pennystreet came in a few places ahead of me, at 20th, with a Lensbaby... It sort of has the miniature effect, though :-) Every single other image in the top 25 was a photoshop simulation of a miniaturization effect. And, basically, the more miniature it looked the better it did...

R.

I would concur with Covert_Oddity and mike_311.

The blur is not in two bands, foreground and background, but rather it is a circular, vignette style which takes away from the miniaturization effect that Bear_Music references.

That being said, I think it's a great photograph in its own right and I would be quite proud of it if I were you.

I wasn't aware of this, it's not a photographic technology I've ever taken a look at. Thanks for the info, you really do learn stuff here :)

I think most scorers associate "tilt-shit" with pictures that seems to be looking down on the subject emphasizing the miniature-ness. This image is straight on which, I think, led to lower votes in this particular challenge...

Ok thanks, hopefully if we have another challenge like this, I'll get it right.

I really liked this one. I gave it a 9. I would have liked to see the surfer as little sharper, but other than that I really really liked this one. Congrats on such a wonderful image.

Hey! I am following you... do you hear me complaining (for a change!)

6 from me for a lovely shot. Whenever there's a tilt-shift challenge, many voters are looking for miniaturization even though it's not a miniaturization challenge. Those people voted you low because you didn't really create a miniaturization effect, as some have explained.

I thought it was worth a seven, so no problems from me.
Your score was, at least, a respectable one - and probably mirrored the confusion of the voters
who didn't have a universal opinion on what exactly a "tilt-shift" image is supposed to look like.

I really liked the painterly quality of this image as well as the surprising bit of action in the water.

That is a splendid image, Anita. The colors are breathtaking, and except for that border, I like it just as it is.

It is confounding when a good image doesn't score well in a challenge. When that happens, I chalk it down to a matter of other images being "better" choices for the challenge, and not necessarily better images. "Better" being incredibly subjective :-)

I really enjoy this photo :-) And I wouldn't worry too much about it---139 people gave you a vote of 5 or higher, as opposed to 36 people who voted it 4 or less. There are always going to be some low scores on a photo. Even among the top three "winners."

As for me, I really love the colors you've captured here. And the minimalist aspect of the surfer against the ocean is beautiful. It's a photo you should be proud of, and it's one I could envision hanging on my wall!
