I'm sure many people forget this rule...

If I had posted this words yesterday they would go to the rant section. But I usually wait because this is not an important matter and can't get nervous for that - this is not real life.

I could not understand how my shot got a sub 6 score. I mean, I'm not saying I had to ribbon, but here there's garbage, nice colors and surely technique.

Then, SC asked me the original and reading the garbage thread I assumed that several people thought this was breaking some rules. I had shown a previous draft of that image before submitting to the SC so I guess they wouldn't ask me the original unless I was in the top 5.

Well, it wasn't breaking anything, so for the ones who voted too early before thinking, I'd like to know what you had thought. No rant at all, just I'd like to know your ideas :)

well, i didnt vote but i'm going to chime in anyway, i probably would have given a 5 as it just doesnt move me. also I ask myself "if he is seprating his waste, why is he throwing a comb into both containers?"

maybe it would have had more impact if one was getting some paper and the other an aluminum can....

Oh I dunno about that... I was asked for the original for this shot and it wasn't anywhere near the top five.

I still can't understand why either.

because it looks on first glance like you've photo-shopped the urinal onto the tree, it has very harsh edges to it

I don't think I would have given you much if I had vote either but I wouldn't have given you a low score either, there's something to be said for effort and creativity right here. I think you have some amazing pieces, no question about that but I really just don't find this appealing at all. So objectively there is technique and execution but subjectively I find it nonsensical and unattractive.

I wouldn't have questioned it's authenticity but find it good that originals are often called upon.

I was one of the 5's, pretty much what has been said above sums it up for me. One of those images that just didn't connect with the voters.

7 from me. i rewarded the effort, but it didn't make an emotional connection for me.

Thank you guys for stopping by - I really appreciated your opinions!

I scored you a 5. Two big coloured buckets floating in a sea of black, with some random objects flying towards them. I appreciate it's a technical shot, I just didn't connect with it. I found the primary colours a bit overwhelming and the cropping of the object trails coupled with lots of negative space at the bottom made the composition look cramped and unbalanced. You've got some terrific folio images, this one just doesn't quite work (for me).

For me, the concept wasn't clear enough. Angle is too straight-on. Not enough depth. You definitely have better stuff, Alessandro.

There's a tendency, when we accomplish something *technically* that was hard to do, hard to figure out and implement, there's a tendency when we do that to think that the picture itself is somehow "worth more" because it was hard to make.

But that's not true. Especially not with the voters. And in the end, as others have said, it is a pretty pedestrian image. But use what you've learned when another opportunity arises to implement those techniques, and you'll do better :-)

Looking at your portfolio, you are far far better than this image.

Thank you very much guys. Robert, you're definitely right: I fell in love with the wrong image because of its 'technical beauty' that is not enough to give it 'real beauty'. I still think it deserved at least a 6 and i'm aware this is not my best image... but I knew it even before now :)

Once again - thank you! I learned another lesson :)

4 for lack of soul. I generally dislike black (or white) backgrounds. Seems like the artist just couldn't figure out a good background and then gave up.

Ok for the lack of soul but I disagree for the background. I could do this kind of shot only with a black background.

Ok for the lack of soul, not for the black background - it was the only way to get a shot like this.

I'm gonna go off on a tangent here: this isn't directed at you specifically, or anybody for that matter, and if it were I'd direct it to myself, since many's the time (as Penny would attest) that I've wandered around muttering that some image of mine "deserved a better score, but...

In exactly the same sense that we say something is "worth" whatever the market is willing to pay, so, when it comes to SCORING, an image is "worth" whatever the voters, collectively, give it; it's a pure, free-market system :-) So anytime we say that "That Ferrari is NOT worth $365,000.00!" we are making a statement, NOT about the supposed "value" of the Ferrari in any objective sense, but about the sense of values of whoever actually PAID that much for it. And in a similar vein, when we mutter to ourselves that our images, collectively or individually, are deserving of a higher score than they have received, we're actually saying, basically, that the VOTERS, collectively, are full of excrement for preferring Velvet Elvis to Silk-Screened Marilyn...

Never mind me, I'm just rambling here... Nothing to see, train wreck's over, move it along...

Robert, talkin' about 'deserving' is a hard matter. Maybe I wouldn't use that term. I guess I'm a humble guy or at least everyone who knows me in person would say that. I put so much passion in this shot and 7 hours working and this is why I thought it 'deserved' a 6. I've seen a some snapshots which got a better result and I felt the bitter in my mouth. In general the verb 'to deserve' would deserve a discussion :)

I like the shot Alessandro and I don't think it's just becase I know the work that went into it...With that said, as I'm looking at it, I wonder if it would had been better if it was just the yellow bucket with the four objects going into it?? Anyone??

How much time, effort and passion put into a photo does not necessarily (or at all) have anything to do with the collective score. Some voters may recognize and reward the effort, others may not. Snapshots can outperform an image that someone traveled a thousand miles to take with a high-end dslr and professional models and spent 17 hours processing it because in the end, it is the final result and more specifically, it's appeal to the voters that matters. As far as the score is concerned anyway. For some people (we all know who they are), the massive effort pays off because the end result is spectacular.

I always ask myself two things before submitting an entry: (looking at my finished image objectively) "How will this compare / compete with what I know is successful on DPC?" and "Do I care about the score in this instance?" - for me, 90% of my entries are based on answering "no" to the second question.

FWIW, on your image, I would have given it a 5 - just not very appealing to me.

Perhaps... perhaps.

I had seen the winner of the past garbage challenge to push to concept behind it much further. I chose two different colors cans and found the sheets of paper and two combs and reversed the colors to show how people should separate their waste. I followed a wrong road, now I know.

Art I know that snapshots can be better than studied images, of course. This is photography. :)

I'm not always interested in votes, but this week we have the Photobowl :)

5.6 seems fair to me, I'm fairly sure I'd have given it a 5 had I voted since the image doesn't speak to me at all. Your reaction seems to be "I followed the 6+ formula, why is it less than 6?". Stop getting hung up on a 'formula', it's art, not science.
