Hello everybody!

I'm taking a cruise later this year and want to take a decent range of gear without taking everything and I want a bag that will be suitably sized, large enough to fit everything and expand a little but not too large I can't really travel with it.

I haven't done much hunting but I'm sure someone here has trekked out with a similar kit. I'm keen on lowepro as their stuff is solid and inventive but open to all suggestions!

I'll be taking:
Canon 60d body
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L ii IS
Canon 17-40mm f/4
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Speedlite 480ex ii

Other things to tuck away when my partner doesn't want to carry them
Fujifilm compact underwater
Sony handycam
Canon 350d / 18-55mm IS ii

Misc things eg batteries which I'm sure all cases will accommodate.

Edit: The cruise is from East Australia to the South East Pacific isles. There will be two domestic flights and I would like to take the bag as carry on luggage... For obvious reasons.

I have a KATA 3N1-30 which should carry all of that quite easily.

I would point out however that the carry-on allowance in Australia is quite different than what is allowed in North America. You might want to check this and avoid complications.

I'm quite happy with this one. I'm carrying a 5D and 4 lenses, including the 70-300 (which is too long and most times has to be attached to the body :)).

The 70-200 is what really limits your choices. I don't know of many sling bags that will take it, so you're going to be either looking at a large messenger style bag or a full backpack style. My personal choices for that have been a Lowepro Primus backpack and a lowepro Classified 250 AW. Both will hold what you note. I like both a lot, but the Classified had crappy attachments for the strap so I removed them and replaced them with carabiners and it's much improved. Both are discontinued, so my either be very cheap or very hard to find, but they are good bags generally.

If you're taking a flash, remember... you'll need more batteries, or a battery charger.

ETA: A backpack is WAY more comfortable to lug around for more time. A messenger style bag, or even a sling when loaded heavily will make you want to set it down often. They don't move well with your body, but many of hte backpacks do (I've done relatively technical mountain ascents with my Primus, for instance).

Lowpro makes some decent backpacks, and I agree with spiritualspatula that a sling bag is uncomfortable for long trips when you have a good amount of equipment.

Not to mention ruin your back.

Of course, you HAVE to set down your backpack to get into it. Not so great if you're photographing civil unrest or something similar that requires you to shoot and move a lot or if you're knee deep in a bog or swamp.

Yeah, this is what I meant. Many backpacks, though, also have horrible suspension systems. As a result, for longer treks I'll just take my purpose built backpacking pack instead, but the Primus has about the best waistbelt I've seen in a camera pack, and even though it doesn't have multiple sizes, my girlfriend can use it comfortably with up to 25lbs for at least 8 miles despite being 7 inches shorter than I am.

If you remove your right arm from the shoulder harness of the Lowepro Fastpack 350, it swings around with side access like a sling bag without setting it down. At one time it was the correct size for carry-on but I haven't checked lately.

Camerabags.com has some great owner reviews on any style of bag you are considering.

I won't necessarily be lugging all the gear around all the time anyway depending on location - but... Weight isn't a huge issue... I work out 5 times a week so that I can lift a really big thing or carry some other thing all day...

Batteries are covered - I have a 40 pack of duracells on the way and a spare OEM battery for the 60d.

Slingshot is out, I'll have the camera in my hand most of the time i won't need to be whipping the bag around my neck.

Thanks for all the help!

BTW- Vote on my guitars so I can win a free guitar kit!

Apologies for reviving a dormant thread

I just bought the lowepro flipside 400AW. Easily fits all the gear I needed and weighs in at 6kg kitted out, still got room for another lense or two though I think I'll preserve the weight.

Neat that it opens from the back too, no one can do a steal on my gear all sneaky like.
