Well it took a year to finally get some photography. We waited until the dead of winter to do the landscape. I got off one simple shot because most of the week it was raining or foggy. I had an hour or so with good lighting so I went and did something local. I am not complaining. I’ll take this any day as having a dummy in a spotlight. I found that judging these images was a real treat instead of a chore. Landscaping is the hardest photography because of the uncontrolled lighting and subject matter. This is where you show your true photographic skills. I want to thank everyone who participated in this contest for as far as I am concerned this was the best one yet. I guess we saved the best contest for last, good luck in the coming year.

Bob, this was a challenging challenge alright, because of the time of year. I went to the mountains on Saturday and got a few shots of a wonderful peak but the sky was solid grey that I decided against using. This weekend the Seattle area was covered in one solid sheet of grey. In the process, I slipped on a sheet of ice and landed on my side and hand that was holding my camera. The first thing I did was to turn on my camera to make sure it still worked, then I assessed my own injuries. Huge bruise but no broken bones. Camera was uninjured.

Joann, I am sorry to here that you fell. Glad you have no broken bones and that your camera survived the fall.

Bob, Did you submit a photo this week?

I did submit a photo this week and I would have to say that I spent more money on this shot then any other shot I have taken. My photo didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, but I learned that landscapes is something I need to read up on and learn. By next year I will be a pro! :-)

This week's challenge was intimidating... I knew it would be tough to submit a decent picture in this one and I was right after viewing the great pictures. I gave out 9's to 7 pictures (a lot for me), and 8's to 26 pictures! And tons of 7's and 6's.

I'll be surprised if my picture rates in the top 1/3 this time. We'll see. I'll admit I didn't make a lot of effort this time. Actually I got kind of lucky with it and happened to catch a pretty good moment but after seeing all the great pictures this time it's no contest. :)

However for the the "Road Signs" challenge I think I have a great picture. Just thought of it tonight. :) I'll probably go snap it tomorrow and then the real challenge is to think of a great Title for it.

I'd like to suggest that we revisit this challenge at other points throughout the year. Living in the NorthWest US there are some excellent opportunities for landscape shots, but this time of the year is absolutely the worst. Perhaps three other challenges during the upcoming year; a Spring Landscape, a Summer Landscape, and an Autumn Landscape. Granted, these would not be the seasons for all of our photographers (IE, those in the southern hemisphere), but at least all of their seasons would be covered as well. Just a thought.

winter the worst season in the NW!?!?!?!?!?! winter is my favorite season in the NW, especially for photography. well, this year isnt very good, because of el nino, but the snow in the mts is a great place to shoot! i would take winter over summer any day. i love the snow and mountains.

but on the other hand. sorry to hear about your fall joann. what peak did you shoot? i went to shoot up by the north cascades hw, but didnt manage much, so i used a photo i shot in edmonds. i live in lake stevens. im not sure what i will shoot yet for the road signs one... hmmmm any ideas?? yield signs keep popping into my head for some reason...

Yeah, i only had one day of sun all week.. i was able to grab a shot, but it was freezing at the same time, so it was hard to stay outside for too long :). It's not the greatest pic, but then again, it's only my first competition also.. we'll see :P Too bad i have so little comments though :( .. 2 up to now and like 140 votes.. whats the usual votes/comment ratio?

I had the same weather problem, and compensated with what some might consider extreme measures, leading to one of my rare "inverse bell" scoring ranges...the "around 5" score I think being generated by a lot of 1-2-3 and 8-9-10 scoring, rather than my usual 4-5-6 scores...but with 15 comments already!

I've had some superb comments on my picture this week and achieved my PB score (so far!). Thanks to all for taking the time to comment, it really makes getting up at the crack of dawn worthwhile, and being snarled at by three vicious dogs belonging to someone who was at the other end of the field and not interested one little bit that I'd practically crapped my pants! Those dogs ruined, for me, what was a great photo shoot!

I am really happy with how my picture turned out and like joanns also fell on ice and have sprained my ankle . So now I am off work just watching my score each hourand reading the comments as they come in.
It's my first challenge, and I was wondering what is the average number of comments a picture receives?

It totally varies. In my 45 submissions to this site, I have a low of 8 for the week and a high of 52 :).

The final challenge stats show total votes cast -- maybe total comments could be listed as well. I'd guess there's a few people get 4-10, a bunch get 10-25, and a few get more...
I try not to look at the comments until there have been 10 made...right now I'm up to 21 on my Landscape photo, still about evenly split between love-it/hate-it!
