We are planning a few days in Minneapolis in September on our way to visiting our daughter in Missouri. I've never been there, and looking for shooting ideas.

I love Minneapolis and am looking forward to what others suggest. I've shot at the Sculpture Garden, the Conservatory at Como Park Zoo, and Minnehaha Falls but mostly because I visit those places with family. I plan to be there late summer or fall and hope to take a few hours to shoot.

What part of Missouri are you going to?

From Minneapolis, we'll drive to La Plata. Then we will drive to Kansas City to fly out.

Anything good along the way to La Plata to shoot?

Well, if you're not in a hurry, you could take the scenic route, along the Mississippi. There are some great roads along there.

Will send suggestions later on -- but do you need to stay in Minneapolis? Duluth is 2 hours from Mpls and is the beginning of the north shore. Duluth is cool itself, but if you keep driving up the north shore of lake superior, it's some of the prettiest areas in the US. There are 9 state parks along the north shore, the superior hiking trail is incredible and many wonderful smaller hikes outside of the state parks.

images from the north shore

I lived in Minnesota most of my life, and if I could go anywhere, it would be to the north shore.

I'm not familiar with the Kansas City area--I've only driven through on my way to Minneapolis. I've never been to Lake Superior. I did go to Itasca State Park many years ago.

Great info...

Warning though: the second link Wendy not only gives you a google malware warning, but in fact my Norton Antivirus had to block an attack as soon as I clicked it.

I will disable your link in a moment...

Now we are planning to go to both Menneapolis and Duluth (thanks chaimelle and Wendy)!

Particularly I want to go to Split Rock Lighthouse, and gooseberry Falls state park.

Anyone here live near either and want to meet up?

Where exactly is the path to see the lighthouse from below "the lakeshore path"? Or Gitchi-Gami trails? Looking for where we drive and park for my GPS!

New York > Minneapolis > Duluth > MO > New York

Now that's a drive!
Are you taking the rout through Canada when coming West, or going around to the south of the Great Lakes?
In Duluth, you are relatively close (about 80 miles) from Bayfield, WI which is more or less the gateway to the Apostle Islands, a beautiful lakeshore area. Kinda out of your way for getting headed back toward MO, though!
How much time are you allotting in these areas? that might help with suggestions. Also, when in September? It gets cold early and fast in that neck of the woods. I've hit snow in the U.P. in late September.

Actually we're flying...to Minneapolis, driving to Duluth, La Plata (my daughter lives there), then flying back from Kansas City!

About 90% of my photography is from the Duluth area (my former home). I would have to recommend the Ariel Lift Bridge.

I don't really shoot traditional scenery, but you might find some spots you like anyway. //www.pepper-land.net/photography/?artist_id=jadin

A more traditional photographer famous around there is Craig Blacklock //www.blacklockgallery.com/ He should give you a ton of locations to pick from. If it's worth shooting, he's probably been there.

Reminds me... how was your trip to the Quebec City area?

Fantastic! We loved Montreal (not our first time) and loved the waterfalls we planned to go to, and one we just found in the Beapre/St. Anne area. And we loved walking around Quebec city (and the ferry ride which let us shoot the sunset over the city) as well.

Photographically, I had a great time and I got two DPC ribbons out of the trip. But that reminds me I never really finished/polished the photos into my master print set...and I'm sure there were quite a few candidates. Heck, I didn't even put them on my website. Sometimes I think my photography is like the metaphorical write-only disk! (At least in terms of sheer number of photos I don't show anyone!)

This winter--when I hardly shoot--I'll have to go back through the year and do some "finishing work!"
