I'm having the weirdest issue: I'm trying to insert a text layer and PS won't let me!! I click on the text tool, draw a text box, and then the cursor won't appear inside the box. I try typing, but nothing appears. If I type something and hit enter, it just saves the layer as whatever I just typed, but no text appears at all.

I imagine it's some sort of quirk and I've got something checked or clicked that I shouldn't, but I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

You probably have the type mask tool, not the text tool, click on the toolbar icon and hold the left mouse button down for a second, choose the first of the four types of text tool.. It should look like a black T

I've got horizontal type tool checked, not mask.

I've re-started the program and the computer, but still, nada

does it work if you don't draw a text box, but just click instead?
07/18/2012 09:48:42 PM · #6
Nope. Nothing at all.

what is your font size? font could be too large for the box you're drawing

I thought that might be the case, but no. I've tried even tiny sizes. I won't let me click in the text box

This is so frustrating. Just this morning I was inserting text without any issues, and now I can't finish this job!!! I don't know what's different!!!! ARGHHHHH!!!

Check the layers palette. Make the active layer an image layer, not a text layer, and try the text box again.

you should try opening a .psd file you might have that has a text layer, then try duplicating that layer. drag it over to the image you're working on, and then play around with it that way.

funny, the same thing happened to me when i just tried it. turns out the layer was created below the active layer that was a masked layer. try moving that newly created text layer to the top.

The newly created text layer is at the very top. Opacity normal, etc.

I've tried copying a text layer from another psd file and it will not copy.

Bear, not sure how to make the "active layer an image layer, not a text layer.

When I create the text box/layer, and save it. Then try to go back in to edit the text, there is not text box to edit, even though there is a layer for the text.

what if you dont create the text box, just activate the curser and start typing.

Cory already suggested that - tried and failed.

activate the "character and paragraph panel" and make sure the text settings (like spacing) aren't all out of whack.

is it specific to the certain file or does it behave the same if you create a new one?

from adobe:

If a tool is behaving erratically, first try resetting just that tools preferences, via the method outlined by Len Hewitt in the post below this one.

Is one of your tools behaving strangely — or not the way you expect — in Photoshop?

For every tool in Photoshop's Tool Box, the user may choose to fully reset JUST that tool to its default settings. To do this, look up to the Options Bar. On the far left side you will see a button which displays an icon of the currently selected tool. This is the Tool Preset picker. Right-click on this button, and you will see two entries:

Reset Tool

Reset All Tools

The first thing to try when a tool is not acting like you expect it should is to apply the command "Reset Tool" from this menu. Often this will cure a problem, and by starting your Photoshop troubleshooting with this procedure you aren't resetting Photoshop's entire behavior and environment to factory default in a wholesale manner. Instead, you're just getting that particular tool back to its default settings, leaving the rest of Photoshop's settings alone.

The second option would be more appropriate in a classroom setting, to get a "fresh version of Photoshop", rather than for troubleshooting Photoshop issues.

If this doesn't cure the problem you're having, then you may need to move on to deleting/resetting all of your Photoshop preferences to factory default.

If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.

It is not specific to a file. I tried inserting text in several, unrelated files, without success.

I just tried resetting the tool, also no success.

Tried resetting everything, still not working.

Johanna, did you delete the .psp file. search for it and blow it away, that's the preference file.
