Hoping for some help on this one..

I'm pretty new to flashes, right now I only have an old sb-26. Is it possible to use a PC sync cord (or another cord?) to connect an sb-26 (off camera) to an sb-28 (off camera) and then when the 26 fires via optical slave, it will also trigger the 28?

Input is greatly apprecaited!

Thanks

The SB28 does not have an optical slave, the SB26 does. Easier to just purchase some RF602 triggers (I have these and they are excellent and not very expensive). Otherwise you need to trigger the SB28 and the SB26 will then trigger optically from this. Off camera flash cord maybe?? Some others will chime in with ideas.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to figure out if the sb-28 can be triggered by an sb-26 which is firing optically. So the setup I imagine would be; D40 pop up flash triggers sb-26 optically, then sb-26 triggers sb-28 via pc sync cable. Can this be done by connecting the two flashes by their pc sync ports? This might be completely wrong...

You would be best of using a sync cord to the SB28 from the camera and this flash would then trigger the SB26.

Yeah that should work, I'll go with that as a last resort. I was just hoping to be cable free on the camera end.

Have you priced the RF602 triggers. They are really cheap and great for this purpose. You would only need one set as the SB26 would trigger from the SB28 but if you can afford two receivers its even better.

I see some on ebay.ca for about $30 CAD but I thought these cheap triggers might be shotty and didn't want to spring for the pricey ones. Thanks a lot for your input Maria.

Yes, you should be able to do that.
I always forget the answer to this question, but I just tested and confirmed with two SB900's as well as one SB900 and one SB28 (I don't have a 26, so not sure on what you'd set it to).

I set one on SU-4 (dumb slave) mode and Remote. I set the other on Remote without SU-4 (slave turned off) and put it in On mode (the SB28 was just "On," no mode changes or anything). These were then connected with a male-to-male PC-Sync cord and fired using the pop-up flash set to manual.

Both flashes triggered fine.

As for triggers, there's an entirely separate discussion to the pros/cons for various trigger options. I've done a brief (comparatively) write-up over here. I can also answer further questions if you have them.

Awesome! Thanks a lot Derek. I have a good feeling that it would work with a 26 as well then.
