Hey guys,
I took this picture a while back and it's probably one of my favorite images, but pretty much everyone I know (who's seen it... not literally everyone I know - that'd be craaaaazy) is indifferent to it.
Honest opinions guys'n'gals... does it suck? If so, can anyone offer any suggestions as to what detracts from it, or how it could be better?

p.s. in case anyone's wondering why I have loads of images of the same things on there, it's because a mate and me are just getting interested in photography and decided to set ourselves specific challenges and themes.... which is what eventually led me to this site :) |

I to am pretty indifferent to it. An image like this just seems like it needs some pop, but instead it's coming off as flat. Here are some ideas:
* Use a long shutter (with an ND filter) to get some movement out of the sky
* Shoot at dusk or dawn for better light
* Make sure the stand isn't visible at the feet
* Maybe put the mannequin in the water and let the water surround the ankles
* Try a lower perspective to add more depth |

Haha... I would try to put it in the water... but it's made of cast-iron and is set about 6 ft into the sand! A few more push-ups required before I attempt that.
Thanks for the comments though - I was just out for a walk with no tripod or anything so it was a case of get it there and then.
What do mean 'not visible at the feet'?

Where the statue is in the ground the sand has been removed, and therefore you can see what it is "standing" on. That is what tells me this is a statue, and makes the photo less of a mystery.
Hope this helps! |

Mood is what is lacking in it which makes it an ordinary photo. Either shoot at a different time of day or lower the exposure that the camera gives you by 2 to 3 stops, then light your subject with an off-camera flash/strobe. The composition also needs to improve. The way the horizon line is going through his head is not attractive. Adjust your hight when you shoot to avoid this problem. |

+1 as to point of view. The placement of the horizon doesn't help the shot. I can see why you like it -- it has possibilities, but I think you needed to get much farther down, isolating the statue more, and smaller bands of water, sand.

Here is another one
Needs a better perspective but I think yours could be interesting as a dark black and white. |
