I ordered some books off of ebay. The next morning I got a shipping notice so I followed the link to see about how long it would take. It's 25 books, so it's a decent size box. It turns out the person shipping lives about 10 minutes from me. They took it to their local post office in Stratford NJ (south jersey). From there, the package went to Jersey City NJ (north Jersey, almost NY). From there it went to Philadelphia (a whole 'nother state!). It still sits there. So 5 days so far. Three different cities many, many miles apart over two states. Now it still has to come back to NJ. What are they thinking when they do this? How much gas was wasted? How many man hours? I was talking to the seller over email today. She couldn't believe it either. She said when she saw the address she thought about just hand delivering it but figured it would be a quick delivery since it was right down the street.

if you don't pay for overnight shipping it has to go sit in the regional warehouse so it doesn't get to you too soon.

UPS does the same thing.

actually that's only my theory, but after watching the tracking on numerous packages sit for days on end and certain places I've come to the conclusion my theory is true.

The other day, when I called UPS (not USPS) to let them know that I wasn't going to be here for the next two days, and to just hold the package, the charged me $5 to save them effort and gas. That was a pisser, at least the USPS delivers my shit without problems.

Today, Lasership "delivered" a package.. By delivered I mean they must have tossed it towards my door, since I was here, and they never even knocked. Needless to say the package was stolen rather promptly. Fortunately they claim that they will be getting me a new product asap. We shall see.

But why ship it to another state? Why ship it to North Jersey? Why not just let it sit in Stratford for a few days if that's the case?

Because cutbacks and competition have forced facility closures and personnel cutbacks. If they close the facility in your town, it'll have to be shipped to some other routing facility.

This kind of "spoke and hub" processing is used by all the shippers to some degree, and also by the airlines (who are just shipping people instead of boxes).

Think of it like this: if people in both Towns A and B each send something to Town C, if they were sorted locally, there would have to be two deliveries to C. But if both are sent (along with all other mail) to the main sorting facility in D, then a single delivery can be made from D to C.

As I understand it, in theory, the most efficient practice is to ship everything through a single sorting facility -- (at least in the past) EVERY FedEx package went through Memphis.

Hub based shipping isn't exactly a USPS specialty. Ship anything by FedEx and it gets a free trip to Memphis.
Any carrier has a priority based shipping model where the most time sensitive stuff gets on the truck first, if you are going by 3-5 day delivery you might get lucky and get on an early truck, but it will depend on what is in the que in front of you.

Has there been any severe weather in New Jersey that might have messed up their normal routes? I think i heard about something on the news about something. Trenton and Monmoth Plants are both closed

It does amaze me when people bag on the Postal service. Try living anywhere else in the world and try the mail service there; we don't know how good we have it.

The USPS has an enourmous handicap compared to the other shippers because of their mandate to deliver First-Class mail to EVERY ADDRESS in the country for the SAME PRICE. Try asking FedEx if they'll deliver your greeting card to Alaska for 45ยข and see how long the laughter lasts ...

LOL! Yeah, a little weather. But there is a major sorting center in Bellmawr (which is close by). Why send it hours away then to another state only to send it right back where it came from? No one can tell me this makes sense.
