Can I get some feedback on this, was the silhouette marked down because it wasn't jet black?

i would think so. This is my first time seeing it and honestly it does nothing for me. the silhouette (if that's even what it is) is very light it is more of a ghost and not nearly prominent enough.

i dont quite get the point of this image.

Yes, I gave you a 5. I liked the image but the challenge was silhouettes and that ghost shadow is not really a silhouette.

me too... i also gave a 5, for the same reasons of Kroburg... good shot but slightly out of challenge theme for me...

It's hard to think of that shadow as a silhouette. And the image lacks of balance - the horizon is centered, the shadow too. It looks like one guy with an umbrella and smoking a cigarette, but not sure of. Too many questions to get a good score. But surely a nice try if we don't judge it with this challenge theme.

I thought this but checked out the definition

silĀ·houĀ·ette
/ˌsilo͞oˈet/
Noun
The dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, esp. in dim light.
Verb
Cast or show (someone or something) as a dark shape and outline against a lighter background.
Synonyms
profile - outline

But I guess it doesn't matter what the true definition is but what the voters think

I thought it was a good idea that did not work out. The silhouette is difficult to see and work out what it is doing there. Walking was totally missed due to the lack of legs ;) The composition was lacking regardless of what the voters thought.

I'm not a technical photo pro by any means, just a lover of photos but I will try to give you my thought on it. I can see what you were going for (I think), I would say that if you were able to capture the figure with the umbrella just as you did in the submission, while also retaining the lighting in the foreground of the other photo with the light trails (minus the light trails) it would have been a fantastic shot, if that makes sense. Crisp detail and good lighting in the foreground out to the sky, while laso capturing that same shaded figure and it would have been a high scoring shot for me. How to achieve what I am describing without layering, etc... I don't know :)

The biggest issue I see here is the double centered composition. The horizon is completely centered in the frame. Crop it differently to get rid of the useless black space, and you have an improvement.

But then the person is centered oddly. So another crop to move the person off center.

To me, this provides a much better flow of the image, as the eyes start at the person and move in the direction he appears to be moving.
