Jessops Into Administration

So, another big electronic chain (this time specifically cameras) bites the dust.

Can't say I'm surprised.... most people use Jessops these days as a place to try the equipment out before buying it from Amazon or some such. I don't think it will be long before Amazon kills the majority of bricks and mortar stores.

All the retail parks will become Ghost Towns.

It's still sad that there will be one less place on the high street to go and play with the equipment though.

On the upside I guess there is potential for some bargains if they start to liquidate stock.

I always use my local independent if I went into Jessops I'd know more than their entire staff combined

I love going into my local shop harrisons they've got great knowledgable staff who all shoot a variety if stuff, they are a canon pro centre and have demo days from all the big manufactures they have a great 2nd section and they let me wander out side and around with a borrowed body and lens to try it.

On first name terms with the staff and have a few as friends on fb

You'll never get that with a big chain, Jessops weren't even cheap either

Online is certainly hurting them some, but I'm not sure it is totally killing brick & mortar. The reverse situation is also true. If I am considering buying something on the store shelf, but question of it is a worthwhile purchase, I frequently fire up the Amazon app on my phone and check some user reviews.

I buy local when the prices make it worthwhile. Canon is pretty much price fixed, so you're not saving that much (on some items) whether you buy local or online. However, I bought a backpack at a local store. Felt good supporting the local guys. Didn't price check. Got home and found out that I paid close to $70 more at the store. Of course they had a no return policy. At that point, I decided not to buy from that store unless I absolutely, positively had to.

My own fault for not price checking. But I also felt screwed. And the no return policy was really quite bizarre. Not your friendly neighborhood camera store. But I guess that's what you get in a tourist town.

I go to NYC for work periodically, that place is a zoo all the time. Love hitting that store up. Most people who work there are really knowledgeable.

No, it's quite annoying if you're going in there for say two ND filters and that's it. It's a tourist trap where no one knows what the hell they want. There's countless B&H staff everywhere, but the number of tourist simply swamps them.

The pulley/track system they use to transport goods around the store is something to behold though. It's really quite astonishing.

edit - Should add if you're going to pick up something like a new tripod, and you have 3-6 in mind, they'll have them all on hand and you can literally play with anything. Filters though, I don't need to touch and feel them before purchasing.

Another advantage of the b&m stores is that you can walk in, plunk down your bucks, and walk out with the item. Even the best online, you have to wait 'til tomorrow.
If the local store is price competitive, I buy from them - that way we both win! Yeah!
