Auto focus on my Nikon D80 has stopped working. The motor is making continuing hunting noise but is obviously not getting anywhere. All lenses exhibit same problem, so I assume something is in the camera. Manual focusing unaffected. Is there anything simple to check and fix before I take the camera to repair or is it probably something deep in the mechs/electronics and I should try to mess around with it? Regards.

I dont know where you are, but around here you can take your camera to a Nikon repair place (Midwest Camera) and they would tell you for free what the problem is and how much to fix it. Then I would make a decision what to do...

It sounds like your screw motor/drive might be off. If you had AF-S lenses, I'd suggest trying them to see if they still work, but it's sounding like a pretty solid AF motor issue, be it the couple or the motor itself.

Does it actually hunt, meaning the focus changes, or does it just make noises and no focus appears to be happening?

No change, no driving the lens, it seems, just the constant noise. Indicates motor/coupling failure rather than the AF electronics issue, right? Bit short on repair capacity here, but will find one, of course.

Yeah, it sounds like an AF motor issue of some sort. I'm not sure if there's any way to determine for sure if that is the case, but if all lenses do it and you can hear it "trying" there aren't many other things that could be happening. Hope you have a speedy repair or get used to MF! ;)
