I recently saw that the Rant thread "Is this hypocrisy?" has been locked. It is not the first thread that I have enjoyed participating in that has been shut down. Frankly I am offended that someone has determined that a thread that several of the site council and many senior members had been posting to has been eliminated, without any explanation. It has been a contentious but reasoned discussion on an issue that the country needs to find consensus on, and censoring the discussion does no one credit. I can see nowhere on the site rules that specifies who has the right to stop a conversation or on what basis they make this unilateral decision.

Are we a community or not?

I presume SC closed the thread down based on the quantity of personal attacks that were being thrown back and forth. They were so pervasive it would have been pretty hard to excise 'em. I *was* pretty surprised, though.

I don't.

I just live here.

I too was stunned at the actions taken by the SC in this regard.

Truth be told I did report some of the comments as I earnestly believed it was getting a tad personal, but most certainly did not expect this course of action.

Perhaps what bothers me the most is that there is no indication as to why this action was taken...nothing... just closed.

Over the years I have undertaken some unilateral actions but always made certain the the parties involved knew exactly why I chose a specific course of action... it helped them realize what it was they did that caused such a reaction and I am confident it helped them act accordingly in future.

If the thread was closed due to my actions, then my apologies to all the participants... such was not my intention.

I love this site for the people I have met on it, many of whom I disagree with on Rants. Since I find few of the challenges at all interesting and am just hanging around for league play finding one of the few threads I was enjoying shut down without warning or explanation infuriating. I am too old to be treated like a third grader. This sort of authoritarian action is more offensive than any comments in the now killed thread. I expect I will be joining the crowd of ex-members come renewal time.

This is nothing new, I bet I can tell you who locked it too.

Its sad. Instead of kicking out the person who continually makes personal threats, yes there is a trend of behavior from an individual that leads to the locking. We are all forced to play in kindergarten.

To quote an SC, THAT is what is bad for dpc morale.

This is quite sad. Its good to have this thread at least to talk about civility in the forums, maybe removing individuals or convincing them to be civil before censoring)
(Perhaps it is indicative of the times, but it is far too easy to be a loudmouth bully when you are not looking someone in the face)

To be honest I wasn't a great fan of that thread and I only looked in occasionally of late but i did still appreciate it being there, I do find it frustrating though that it can be locked like that without explanation. This morning it was if an old grumpy friend had gone and died on me.
I agree with Paul, we should remove the uncivil individuals before we lock down a decent thread.

it would be nice if they validated entries as fast as they locked down threads. :P
01/29/2013 09:41:56 AM · #17
Oh, bummer. Well, perhaps it's the number of complaints the thread is generating that determines whether it gets shut down. Rant threads should probably have more leeway for heated discussion, but that thread probably got more than its share of leeway. :-)

Well, it was a good and enjoyable discussion. It certainly shifted my views some.

I'm just sorry that I've been on the road and moving, such that I didn't contribute to the end of that discussion.

Oh well, we can always start another argument. ;)

Btw: Destin FL is pretty nice. :)

you need to get TPL up and going so we can really get down and dirty with the personal attacks.

ASAP folks. Just doing a very long back roads cruise.

Apologies for the delay, but I'm having an extraordinary time. :)

You guns argument folks need to consolidate your efforts and walk the thin line if you are ever going to challenge the thread views on that stupid gay marriage thread. Fragmented, locked down threads aren't going to be a challenge to it at all!

Come on! Get it together people!

i say they unlock it since it was unfairly locked to begin with.
01/29/2013 12:41:56 PM · #24
It was me (as Mike_311 so coyly alluded to) who locked it because it was generating more personal attacks than could be excised (as bear_music surmised). I am unlocking it, but it should be remembered that though it is rant, it is still moderated.

so is anything ever done to those who cant play nice or do you just removed posts and lock threads as you see fit?
