Responded, but question #1 has no checkbox for other, and even filling in a description it still told me I hadn't answered the question, so I had to click a checkbox that didn't really fit my answer.

arg! hopefully that won't screw up the results. i tried to fix it, but it won't let me add a checkbox to other now that the survey is live. thanks for responding!

My problem is that I want to respond to the first question "I don't re-name my photos" but there's no way to do that.

i wrestled with that, kevin; in my first draft, that was actually my first question. but because i'm not ready to upgrade my surveymonkey account, i'm limited to 10 questions. even without that question, don't let it stop you. taking into consideration your panoramio account, you do give those images titles. just go from there: you use the topic when you name your images. if you don't mind, go on and give it a shot...

I had the same issue. The first three questions require an answer, but there is no "I don't rename" choice. It's a complicated topic, pretty hard to encapsulate in 10 questions.

help me out with this, please. if it's a matter of semantics, i'll redo the survey and/or break up it into different surveys. if you say "I don't rename", do you mean you are storing/archiving your image files as "IMG_1234.jpg" or whatever 8-character name that your camera gives the file?

Yes - that's what I do - but I added that into the text of "other" in my response.

I do this at times also. I have no consistent naming convention. I just make sure keywords are properly attributed to every photo.

Yes. And separate in folders. I always keep originals unless they are snapshots for friends etc. I rename them when I prepare them for web, usually for family and friends and even then I just add a prefix s for small

Isn't that a different question:- Giving images titles? I was thinking your survey is about file names?

Anyway I filled in the survey, and for question 1 I selected Topic, but filled in Other with "I don't re-name my photo files - I keep the camera generated names", which I also used for questions 3 & 4

Sorry to be difficult.

I'll be interested to see the results at the end.

Yes. I don't see it as a value-add to rename originals. In fact, in most cases, I don't see it as a value add to rename edited files. My originals get filed by date as they are imported by Lr. Keywording takes care of keeping track of them. Edited files are stored separately from originals, and they are stored in folders by topic.
I would probably modify my strategy if I were shooting professionally. In fact, I almost certainly would. I would most likely assign a unique number to the shoot, perhaps based on a customer number. That would eliminate the need to rename on export from Lr. Originals and edits would, I think, still live in separate locations.

In Aperture for professional/commissioned shoots, I just create an album off the project for edited photos. The originals and edits still live in the base project with some elevated into an album, which doesn't technically store anything, just a soft link to the edit.

Pretty much the same here. (mind you, I've only done 2 commissioned shoots - so it's quite easy). I would probably have a more structured file naming system if I was shooting more and was doing it professionally with high volumes of images, as it stands right now, it works well.

I use an in-camera prefix 800_ for the D800 300_ for the D300, when the image sequence reaches 9999, 800 becomes 801 etc etc. This prevents having 2 files with the same image number.

@kevin: you're not being difficult ;-) as fritz noted, this is a complex topic

@fritz, chris, sarah, others, thanks for contributing, and please continue!

my situation has been a bit different from the outset and i'll share more of the details once the survey hits a critical mass (i'd really like to get 100+ responses).

i started 9 years ago with a 300D and very quickly started overwriting files when the internal counter hit 9999. i've been using a particular naming convention ever since, even though subsequent bodies would have allowed me to do what many of you are doing.

all the same, i'm very curious as to what others are doing and their thinking on this topic.

In Aperture, two files can have the same name in a project. If you look under the hood, it gets renamed differently, but on the front end, you wouldn't know. So if you inadvertently decide to call two images the same name, no worries.

Also, I should add for professional shoots, I organize everything into folders.

Weddings (Folder)
- Bride&Groom_Location_Date (Project)
-- Reception (Album)
-- Ceremony (Album)
-- Random (Album)
-- Keepers (Folder)
--- Reception (Album)
--- Ceremony (Album)
--- Random (Album)

Corporate_Headshots (Folder)
- CompanyName_Name_Date (Project)
-- Keepers (Album)

Infants (Folder)
- FirstName_LastName_Date (Project)
-- Keepers (Album)

And so on. There's always a Keepers album or folder in every project which is where I dump the images to be delivered.

My personal random shots follow similar hierarchy and level of detail to their placement. I keyword everything to death. Who's in the photo, genre, style, year, month, did I use a flash, dominant colour, ..... Retrieval becomes a joke when you do this.

Ditto.

I don't rename my files...I use Lightroom for "serious" photos and iPhoto for "snaps".

In LR, I flag the interesting ones into a quick collection then do edits, possibly removing/adding some files as I go. Once I have the edits, I save the quick collection as a named collection or add them to an existing collection. If I ever need to find them, I look in the collections and or search by date. I simply don't mess with the file names.

In iPhoto, I either import photos into events sorted by date or if there's an actual "event", I'll rename the event and drag and drop multiple events into one named event. Again, I don't mess with the file names or the folder structure.

In either case, I can pull up the original file, or export a duplicate or whatever I need via the program, using it's cataloging.

I just did your survey, Skip.
It wouldn't let me answer question number one the way I wanted to - that is with an "Other" answer,
but the rest of it was easy and fairly quick to answer.
(I only had to guess once.)
