Really guys, this shit is nuts.

Now I do grant you that this is pretty high-level stuff, but it isn't unique at all.

Looking in from the outside, it seems like all of the groups have some level of this sort of stuff going on. I love the good stuff that does come from these groups - but really - is there any need for this sort of stuff? It seems so.. Theatrical.

I just don't get it I guess. Why does this sort of stuff have to be included in the package? What purpose does it serve? Is there any reason for it other than power-consolidation and preservation, and the potential to build fanatical loyalty? Is any of this really intended to make these people able to live a more full happy and productive life?

Well, it doesn't really matter if it really results in them living more happy or productive lives, what matters is if they THINK they are, or THINK they're right. It's my principle objection to religion as a whole, frankly. All religions are justified by the same argument. Quite obviously, it's impossible for them to be true, but they are all absolutely true, so far as they're concerned

And the easiest defense is that these folks you speak of aren't "REAL" _______. They're just crazies! REAL _______ love everybody. But they all hinge upon the same declaration of faith and their source of truth.

Religion is interesting to me. I enjoy learning about it, and frankly, I don't think people are integrated and understanding enough of each other without it to even get along without some sort of punishment/reward system. In light of this, it's always hard for me to see stuff like this and take any other stance but that which is diametrically opposed.

FWIW, you should watch all of Jesus Camp, if you haven't already.
