I dunno how many of you follow the "I F*cking Love Science" page on Facebook, but here's a different POV on what they're doing.

never heard of the fan page and this is not cool. here's hoping they change their policies.

Mr. Wild takes a great approach, pointing out what is (very) positive about IFLS, and not dwelling on the negative, but urging IFLS to make small changes to eliminate the problem. I'm not a FB user, but I would think that hearing from enough other FB users about the issue (in a positive manner) would go a long way to encourage her to correct the problem.

Read the comments...it's depressing to see how many would say the good that the page does by promoting science and technology justifies any infringement or people that still think that just because it's out there on the net, it's free for the taking.

It looks like they may be taking the criticism to heart. Almost all the posts now have the source credited.

I'm sure if we looked we'd find a few conservative or religious websites that don't like artists. (and perhaps want to censor them!)

I subscribe to that newsfeed, and I posted the above article to my FB page two days ago. I noticed she is now attributing photos, and I felt very happy about that!

The real question isn't just about her giving credit. It's also about asking before taking. If the material is used, even if the source cited, without consent of the creator, it's just as bad.

i imagine at some point we're going to wind up in an iTunes-styled micro-stock universe where you register all your images and then automatically get paid so many pennies after so many 1000s of impressions, and that it will happen automatically. if you are lucky enough to have a viral hit, you'll get a killer payday. otherwise, you'll at least be compensated for your contributing to someone else's commercial venture.

at least, that's what i hope.
