So I wanted to post a nice little forum thread this morning saying look at my average - I have now reached a 6 and thank everyone for the enjoyable ride... but for some darn reason I can't.

Previous stats:
Entries - 68 (finished)
Average - 5.9998

69th entry score - 6.0102

Current stats:
Entries - 69 (finished - 70th in voting)
Average - 5.9991

Now I ask you with tears in my eyes - how can I score higher than my average in my most recent challenge and my average score goes down??
I have pasted my scores in Excel and done my own maths and I should be on an average of 6.0265 (if the DQ is not counted as a Zero score).

Can we rely on DPC figures now? How do we know the results are accurate? (just stirring the pot :-) )

The DQ is counted as a zero score (or at least it should be - there have been some problems in the past with the scripts)

There have been a few anomolies in the past. My recommendation (and I have done this when I spotted them) is to put a ticket in directly to Langdon. He did fix the problem that I reported.

I think a similar thing just happened to me. I recently got my overall average barely above 6. I think before last night's rollover it was 6.0001 or 6.0002. I got a 6.1485 on last night's challenge and now my overall average is 5.9997(!?!)

Yo, don't cry about it man, it's not worth it.

Sounds like the "Avg Score Received" includes votes that removed by the "vote scrapper"??

I suspect a change in the algorithm that calculates the score. My average score changed (by +0.0005) even though I wasn't entered in any challenges.

I also noticed that my number of comments received went down during the middle of last week. I suspect it's all connected.

I don't know if it means anything but DPC was completely unavailable to me last night for 15 minutes before rollover. Maybe Langdon took her down so he could mess with peoples' scores :-)

So I'm not alone. Others have also seen odd things happen too. Glad I wasn't imagining things although it is a bit like The Matrix in here isn't it?

My comments given went down but it's not the first time that's happened. Do you lose them when people delete pics you've commented on?

I've noticed my average goes down EVERY time I enter a challenge......but that could be 'cause I suck:)

Yes, but if I remember correctly the comments change only when the maintenance script runs. Then it cleans up comments on images deleted. It happens during the middle of the US night so probably not that many people see it - site goes down for an hour or so. Doesn't seem to happen that often these days but a few years ago there was about 30 mins downtime for 'site maintenance' everyday. It was around 11.00 am my time - so always seemed to coincide with my mid- morning score check :)

There was a scoring anomaly that I reported a couple of yrs ago concerning DQs (and included self DQs) where those votes were not being removed from the overall average but Langdon corrected that at the time.

For me, the site went unavailable at 11:53 PM EDT, but was back up by 11:55. Before it went down, it was taking 2-3 minutes to display each page, so trying to get my shot entered was a pain. When it came back up, the site was flying - almost screen refresh speed to display a page. Weird.

The last few minutes before rollover are bound to be the heaviest traffic time, with people trying to "finish" voting and others (or maybe the same folks) trying to get their entry uploaded ... it is perhaps more remarkable that the site doesn't completely crash more often.

i don't think DQ's count as zero, do they?! if by "zero score" you mean "null" or "no score", then that makes sense

otherwise, why in the heck would anyone ever self-DQ?

Yes, DQs are null, no score both self and real DQs
