Professional Photographer/Dancer. Uniqueness is the key to success. I will dance and shoot simultaneously. The style will be called "Blurred Faces of Disbelief / Horror" and I will OWN it.

I'm told it's a very dangerous sub-genre of the industry: either the horses don't want to cooperate, or they are dangerously (and indiscriminately) enthusiastic.

Slippy is a great teacher and demonstrator from what I have been told.

Scarily enough many people DO believe this...and end up on YANAP. Dead-skin babies, skin-smoothed children, blurry/oof/under- and over-exposed tilted horizons littered with frightened, angry or scary subjects (daren't call em models, might give them ideas). And all badly posed.

Apparently, if you're on FB you're already a pro.

Yeah he started freaking me out a couple of times wearing that horse head and getting into character. Definitely takes some getting used to but I think his work is amazing and to actually see a true artist at work is priceless.

With that horse head mask, you can join in the fun, as long as the other horses have had too much to drink.

you get paid you're a professional. So everyone these days wants to be a professional.

make a living at it? own a business and make a profit? Different question entirely.

I plan on using photography IN my profession. As for a professional photographer, I think that people throw around the word "professional".
With the invention of so many PP programs, and making DSLRs more affordable, and with FaceBook becoming more and more prevalent... too many people "deem" themselves as a professional. I see people on Craigslist offering their services for 100 photos on a CD with a copyright release for a mere $25!!!
Really?

I, myself, LOVE photography. I am by NO MEANS a professional! But, I want to use photography as a form of therapy. Almost done with my bachelors degree (about 10 months away) and afterwards, I'm going to major in Counseling Psychology for my Masters.

Hopefully within the next 5 years I'll have my own practice!
Technically, in my state, I could open an "alternative counseling" practice... but I'd rather have the true credentials to be able to to it... and would like to better my photography skills in the meantime.

Sorry, I started rambling.

To answer your original question...
No, I don't plan on becoming a professional photographer
But I do plan on using photography IN my profession. :)

Just remember that in the counseling realm (as in medicine) you need to be very careful with your photography to avoid violating HIPPA/confidentiality rules; informed consent and releases will be important.

That said, many people are happy to have their picture taken and story told -- my friend Lonny Shavelson has published a whole book of portraits and interviews with people who had been in and out of mental institutions (I'm Not Crazy, I Just Lost My Glasses).

Actually, I plan on letting my clients express themselves through their photography, create a "journey" so to speak. Utilize pictures as stories, if it makes sense?
As for them having their story told, that's entirely up to them. What I would do would stay confidential, unless they want to allow it to be published. In which case, I'd be happy to do so.

I am especially drawn to the substance abuse/suicide/self-hatred side of psychology. There are inner demons that we fight, and for them, the battle seems especially hard (especially since I have been there myself).

Interesting idea ... sounds like a potential candidate for a research grant somewhere down the line. :-)

Been looking into that as well. :)
If you know or hear of anything that may help me along with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not good enough to be a professional, IW/OM, but my brother has been a pro for most of his working life. (Photography has been in the family for a hundred years or more as a hobby.)
As for stork photography, he may have a few in his portfolio from when he was in Europe. I don't have any photos of storks, but plenty of egrets and cranes. ;-Þ
