I've been experimenting with composition.

Ordinarily, I'd compose a $10 watch something like this:

This afternoon I did this:

What are your thoughts guys?

The bottom strap is awkward. Very awkward. Fold it under?

The second image is about 40x stronger. :D

Just crop a bit harder I think...

Or, possibly, just lay the watch a bit flatter?

Dunno, Rob's right though, there is something about that strap...

The diagonal composition looks more interesting, but I agree the bottom strap adds a lot of "weight" to the bottom part of the shot.

What is needed is to "pose" the watch suspended, so the strap flows naturally. A clamp out of image up and another out of image down, some form of clamp or something else, ideally that allows the straps to curve a little.

clamping isn't a bad idea..

Alternatively, a bit of hot glue stick and a lighter works wonders. Just heat the end, stick it to the object (watch), then heat the other end, and stick it to the surface.

Thanks guys. Great advice. This morning I found a material that held the strap down
just fine but I couldn't then recreate the strength of the original composition. Really
frustrating! Anyway, I'll go back to it later after a coffee or two..

In the meantime, I've applied a crop to the original in an attempt to lessen the visual
weight of the lower strap. Do you think it's a crop to far - or a slight improvement?
