The Droste Effect description, while historically accurate, doesn't seem to match a large portion of what is called "droste" on the Internet.

Seems the challenge description was pulled verbatim from Wiki, as stated.

But if you google droste images, there are a majority of "infinite regression" spiral type photos Droste

Just saying'

Yup, the variations on a theme are what make life interesting.
Artists see a principle and run with it, thus creating a new art form.

The results Google returns are clearly NOT droste effect IMO.

Even if one cares to argue that they are (and I'm fine with the argument), the challenge description is extraordinarily clear.

I can't tell you what everyone else will do, but I will not give more than a 5 to anything that doesn't specifically follow the description.

And some voters see the new art form and hammer those artists down for it.

I understand Cory's viewpoint. However, I can't tell you what anyone else will do (other than Cory), but I tend to be a little more flexible in creative interpretations of the challenge description. I like to think of the challenge description less as a hard and fast rule and more of a general guideline that can be used as a stepping off point. I will often reward a creative interpretation of the challenge description that captures my interest. To each his own.

For my own part, I would never decide how to score an entry that I haven't even seen.

usually I score from one to ten, regardless of the description.

I go with Ezra Pound: "What thou lovest well remains, the rest is droste."

Intimidated by this challenge...so many interpretations, a lot of work for a bad score.

In my view the original image on the Wiki page says it all: you just should get the impression that an image can go to infinity. Nothing more, nothing less. Forget Google. (Of course I'm very biased, grown up in Haarlem (NL) in the time Droste was "Royal Droste")

i'm so glad the droste challenge is starting 'cause that means my candy entry will finally be ending. now if only fall colors would end quickly, too.

the only thing good about the candy challenge was the devouring of the subject after the shoot. anything beyond that is just PTSD.

ok so I'm way behind on this one
Took a photo for Droste effect today. Just now looking at it.
I have Elements 7 and CS5 but I do not have pixel bender and when I tried to download and use it once before, it was a disaster. Is there any way to do the simple (not spiral) effect w/o pixelbender?

In photoshop:
1) Take pictures with a frame in it.
2) On the first image, select everything inside the frame, then inverse the selection. Control j to paste the selection to a new layer. Now, turn off the original layer.
3) Open the next image, copy and paste it into the 1st image, behind the 1st layer. Use transform to size it, skew it as needed and move it into the frame. Because it is behind the original scene, it will only show up in the frame.
4) Repeat step 2 and 3 as long as you want.

Does anybody have trouble posting for the Droste challenge tonight?
I get this each time I tried:

Thanks, Rebecca - that's pretty much what I figured out. But your description will help.

And don't tell me I won't be able to post it if I get it done - I'll scream!
