Been a while since my laptop was new, I am thinking of getting a desktop with a monitor. My desk can only accomodate one screen, 18-19''. I would be grateful for suggestions of what's a good type/make in regards to image editing and whatever else I need to know choosing a new monitor, including calibration issues (do some monitors respond to this better than others?) and whether it places any unusual demands to the video cards when it comes to built the desktop. Thank you.

I'll leave aside the desktop/laptop decision, since you can drive an external monitor with either. First, you may find it almost impossible to find a quality external monitor in the 19" size range. Most monitors start at around 22", and this is mainly because all newer monitors are either 16:9 or 16:10 format, that is, wider than the older monitors for a given height. So a new monitor that is the same height as an older 19" monitor will be more like 22".
Assuming you are looking at newer 22"-class monitors, here are things to look for:
- An IPS LCD panel
- A color gamut that is at least 97% of sRBG. Noormally, this means a fluorescent backlight, not LED. Some expensive LED-backlit monitors have very good color gamut, but less expensive ones have narrower color range than fluorescent-backlit units
- Resolution should be 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 at this size. I would not personally buy a lower resolution display, but if I had to make a choice between a higher quality display and greater resolution, I would choose the higher quality (IPS panel, greater gamut) over resolution. Unless you are extremely cost-sensitive, I don't believe you need to make that trade-off.
- Connectivity that matches up with the systems you will be using. Normally this is not an issue, but it can be.
Finally, do not be taken in by "specsmanship." You will see manufacturers touting incredible "dynamic contrast" ratios and emphasizing fast response times, but in fact you can pretty much ignore these two specs. For example, IPS panels have some of the slower response times out there, but unless you are a hard-core gamer, you won't care.

Me too, except mine is 24". Asus seems to be hitting the sweet spot between price and performance the best these days.

IPS, I see here, comes in a plethora of flavours. Any distinction between AH-IPS, H-IPS, P-IPS, S-IPS?

Compared to the differences between IPS and non-IPS panels, the differences between the IPS types are small. I would not pay much attention to them. I'd look more at reviews for specific monitors, looking for things like color accuracy, backlight uniformity, reliability.

I got this monitor for X-Mas. Good price and covers sRGB gamut. Very pleased with it so far.

I have always liked the HP monitors I used as they seem to look very nice to me.

I don't see one single monitor in their current line-up that has anything but 72% gamut.......WTF???

I have thought that these monitors were really nice for what I was doing. They seem awfully clean......what am I missing?

Educate this po' fool!

I had a five year old IPS HP monitor with 102% gamut, which was quite nice. When it broke last fall and I went to replace it, it appeared that HP is only selling cheap consumer grade stuff now. Which figures, because the needs of gamers and the needs of photographers are very different, and there are way more gamers than photographers out there.

They come calibrated too, which is a plus!
