I'm very seriously considering buying one of these cameras but I can not decide which one. I've studied all the reviews and testimonials. It seems like the X 100 S is getting slightly better reviews and I have yet to read a single bad thing about it. The X Pro 1 is very highly rated as well though it seems to be scored a tiny bit lower from most reviews I've read.

I would go with the X 100 S in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fixed lens, that is the one thing holding me back. The X Pro 1 has interchangeable lenses and so I'm leaning that way slightly but some of the reviews make me think I wouldn't care because the X 100 S is so spectacular.

Does anyone have experience with these cameras and give me some advice? I know there are some very well respected members that use these can you guys tell me what you like/dislike about either of them?

I own the x100 and it's the only camera I use these days. It produces excellent quality images and is a pleasure to use. The x100s has improved on the x100 in several areas.

cory has recently acquired an x100s and I know he loves it!

You will get used to the fixed 23mm lens and the quality of the lens is oustanding.

No more lugging around a load of equipment is also a big plus for me.

Until I can afford a Leica Monochrom (probably never!), I cannot see me ever changing/upgrading.

Tiny has an X-Pro 1 and seems to use it a lot

Gotta agree with what Mike said.

Essentially YOU have to decide if you need interchangeable lenses or a leaf shutter. For me the leaf shutter was a huge draw to the x100 series, and I have no real need for interchangeable lenses on this camera (actually, it's a joy to not need to do so)..

If you REALLY feel like you need more focal lengths, there are now two converters one for 28mm equiv, the 35mm is standard, and there is now a new tele converter that goes to 50mm equiv. The quality of these is nothing short of stellar.

No matter what you do, I think you'll be reasonably happy.

--

One more thing - the x100 (original) with the latest firmware updates is just damned near as good as the new x100s, and some folks prefer the bayer filter sensor over the x-trans filter (more character, and no waxy-skin jpegs at higher ISOs).. For about 1/2 the price, it's a damned fine option - in fact, I'm thinking of getting one just for the hell of it. :D

Hope that helps some. FYI - be sure to budget another $200-$500 for accessories, you'll probably want a few toys to go with the new gadget (leather case, Luigi makes nice ones, but they're stupid money, lens hood and hood adapter, maybe a UV filter to protect the lens, etc)

Check out the Fuji-X forum for lots of info.

Thanks for the info guys. I think you made up my mind Cory, with the two focal length converters as an option my mind is completely made up.

Now to work a weekend of OT to pay for it so I can keep the wife happy.

I use this for my x100 and find it very good > BlackRapid SnapR 35
I also have an official Fuji leather case, in brown, which is very nice but it was expensive and I have only used it once.

One of these as well ! > Thumb grip for x100s

..and one of these > Soft Release button

I can also recommend these > Lensmate for Fuji x100/x100s

Enjoy !

Ok, just a couple more pointers:

First, the Fuji leather case is fine, really nice.... The only problem is that the protective top bit doesn't fit on the camera with the filter/hood assembly in place.. (PITA!!) Still, the 1/2 case is great, and I leave it on, always.

Secondly, I don't like any of the soft-releases mentioned in that article, they're all too bulky and tall. Try one of these instead, far better IMO.

Third, I don't like the thumb grips, but it's largely due to the way I hold the camera, for some shooters I'm sure they're awesome - for me, having the hotshoe available is more important.

Finally, You'll want a lens hood - don't bother buying Fuji, they're stupidly expensive, try the JJC hood - check the forums I posted earlier, there's a thread titled "How my x100s looks like" in there you'll find basically every possible configuration.

Kris -- I suspect you would be happy with either. I really like my x100s. I love the size, image quality, and how quiet it is. I have not used an X Pro 1. I have the 28mm equivalent converter and it works great. I will admit, there are times I wish I could go wider (I shoot wide a lot with my dSLR) or get more reach. But, the advantages I get by having something small enough to always have with me that produces such nice images are enough for me.

I had X100 (not S) and X Pro 1 w/xf 35mm f1.4 at the same time. Bought the Pro a while after the X100 but still ended up almost only using the X100. Amazing camera. And the S is better. I found the Pro more "boring" While the X100 was my special little camera.

If I had to pick one: X100S; all the way.

How about an X-T1?
Beautiful camera. Same sensor as the X100s I think. Water 'resistant'. Very nice EVF (though I prefer the look thru the XPro-1 and X100/s).

Glad to hear the 28mm converter is solid. I'm strongly considering one of these as a "bigger brother" to my lx5 for backpacking/mtb/anywhere that it's way off the beaten track. Especially considering the leaf shutter with my sb900's....

If you're iffy about the prime, honestly just walk around with your 28-300 for awhile only shooting at 28mm. Your whole way of viewing things will change (probably for the better) as you'll start to think about how to use the equipment instead of how the equipment uses you. If you like it, awesome, if you don't then there's your answer.

I ordered my Fujifilm X 100 s tonight. It's due to arrive Monday. I can not wait.

You're gonna love it. :D

You will just love that camera !

Not one for manuals or books on cameras normally but I bought the x100 version of this and can recommend it > Photographer's guide to the X100s

Congratulations, I have the X Pro 1 but should have got the X100 as I only use the one lens and have no intention of buying any others.

Have fun with it.

I "need" another camera like I need a hole in my head, but I was thinking about getting an X100s... Seems like everyone who has one loves it. We'll see.

The Fujifilm X100s design looks better and reasonable price,

Went home for lunch today and there was a surprise waiting for me on the porch. Woo-hoo.

First impressions are that I love the size and build quality. The old school controls are awesome. Dials feel good and I love the aperture ring on the lens.

I have a lot to learn. Completely different feel than my D700. I'm excited to have a camera I can take with me everywhere.

I think you will be happy. Mine resides in the backpack that holds my laptop effectively making it with me most of the time during the work week. Even when my dSLR is accessible, the X100s is increasingly becoming the one I grab for most projects. I look forward to seeing some of your images from it.

ETA: I just checked and 10 of my last 11 challenge entries were taken with the X100s. I am pretty happy with every one of them.

So nobody gives any thought about X-T1 that Tom mentioned earlier? Its a little camera that make me excited - though its a lot of money as well - Canon 70D territory and thean any good lens is $600-$1000 on top... But no denying its all manual dials glory.

Also what about Canon EOS M? If one is considering Fuji X100, the EOS M is even smaller, full APS-C size sensor, same image quality as those Canon Digital Rebel DSLRs and the 22mm f2 pancake lens (35mm equivalent) is superb optically. Whole kit sells NEW for a mere $300. True its autofocus is a bit slow but so what? From what i've heard the X100 also autofocuses a bit slow or is a camera that you should take your time taking photos with. Why not EOS M?

Mansoor -- The X-T1 was announced after I ordered my X100s. Otherwise, I might have seriously considered it. Being able to have multiple lens would be an advantage. However, taking additional lenses off the table with the X100s had some financial advantages for me. I can't speak to the EOS M. In terms of focus speed, the X100s has not been a problem for me. I find it quick in reasonable light -- I understand the X100s is much improved over the X100.

I think EOS M is seriously underrated. I had one, i now regret selling it. For a pocket "point & shoot" type camera with DSLR quality - its perfect. The 22mm/f2 lens is superb in low light and as a walk-around lens. And you can't beat the deals on it. Just wish they had an option to disable touch screen which was annoying when camera is handing around your neck and while walking, the focus point jumps all over the place bouncing against your body.

Here are a few sample shots from my EOS M and the 22mm/f2 lens. I did not use a flash for these:

Low-light, indoor shot in a restaurant with overhead lamp:

And here is one with a human subject:

Most of my shooting is this kind of indoor kids portraits and EOS M didn't disappoint.

Ok, i won't hijack this thread but create a new one to compare EOS M with X100.
