I have the opportunity to spend a few days, only 4 or 5, in NL soon. Question is, should I fly to St John's and drive the east, boat trips to the Witless reserve etc, or should I go to Deer Lake and spend the time in the Gros Morne park? I have never been out there and just looking at websites can become a little overwhelming, so all suggestions are welcome from those in the know.

My photographic preferences are for landscapes (preferably with rocks, hills etc), birds & wildlife, if that helps.

Tough question! I live in St. John's (for the past 15 years) but I grew up in Deer Lake so I know both areas well. Because I'm homesick I'd probably recommend Gros Morne. LOL

What time of the year? The boat tours around Witless Bay are not operating this early, you won't see many birds (puffins and gannets not nesting yet), no whales, no icebergs yet.

Gros Morne has spectacular scenery and you'll probably see more wildlife there than on the east coast. Pretty well guaranteed to see caribou and moose.

Of course the east coast has nice (but different) scenery too, Cape Spear and little fishing outports. You'll see way more trees on the west coast than the east coast.

Feel free to send me an email if you want to ask more questions.

This describes the entire coast of Newfoundland, and there is a lot of coast.

Thanks Karen. Having discussed with my OH, who's professed herself not that keen on hiking, I think we'll be heading for St John's on this trip. Hopefully, I'll get myself to Gros Morne on a future trip.
