How long do you guys keep originals after a challenge? My disks starting to fill up quite a bit with the RAW Files, I have no intentions of making prints of from them..

I have the RAW files for every shot I have taken since I bought my first DSLR more than a decade ago which makes it about 3/4 of a million shots. And those are what I loosely call the "keepers". Storage was expensive a decade ago, now you can buy a 3 terabyte drive for $100. I keep only the last month of so of shoots on my laptop, and the rest get dropped on a remote HD. Stuff like the current hidden Gem challenge are quite a walk down memory lane. I also keep a 1TB Passport of my best and most recent stuff in my computer bag. And every image is backed up at least once.

I originally backed up to DVD as well but once I had a couple of feet of DVD binders on the shelves after a few years, I quit doing that.

Well, first off I think you should have all of those files backed-up somewhere else anyway ... technically we could ask for an original for validation at any time, though it's unusual for it to happen after a week or two, but it shouldn't be that hard or expensive to at least back up those originals you use for entries ... personally I back up every original to CD/DVD — though my originals are smaller JPEGs — you never know when you'll need something for a background or Flip/Blend source image.

cough, cough....I have 4 HD's...a total of 4 TB's...and they are almost full...(hangs her head in shame....(with a grin)

2 of which I travel with (passports) and 2 that are at home...plus I pay to have them "backed up to some such cloud...who know where"...."just in case....

ETA:

I really "don't" put my files on my computer....they go straight to my HD's. I found that working of those is easier and less back n forth business...I only keep little stuff on my internal HD's...my files are way....WAY....WAYYYYYY...to big to store on my computer.

As others, I keep the original imports (which are mostly DNG's until I joined this place - much to my chagrin for the Hidden Gem challenge) backed up permanently - at least of the keepers.

For. Ever.

(except for those not backed up before the great HD crash of '05)

I have multiple copies on multiple hard drives, plus some on those things called DVD's.
back up your back ups, then back it up again

if some of you don't do this already, i highly recommend NOT keeping your photos on the same hard drive as the operating system. this way if something happens to your operating system and you need to wipe it out, you have your photos safe and secure on a second hard drive.
if you have a laptop this can be a pain, but its well worth the effort to have them separate.

I maintain all the originals that are the ones that I edit and such on 2 separate drives, then I have a separate drive for a back up for each of those, then I have an external drive for a 2nd back up. Most of those are on DVD as well.

when it comes to your precious photos, you can never have too many copies/backups

Like a lot of folks above, I keep my RAWs pretty much forever. I would never think of throwing my film negs away, and likewise my digital "negatives." I do "cull" on import to Lr, so I am not keeping the utter dreck, only the images that I feel have some value.

Thanks guys,

I usually have not saved my RAW files at all nor have not thought about saving any of them after the challenges were over.... my favorite eagle pictures I have saved though just because I was proud of them... I usually have mine all printed out for my scrap booking and then upload to
google+

Its all down to you really, I throw stuff all the time as it has no value in my opinion.

I only save the things I like best at the time and as time goes by I throw out the older ones as rubbish.

I have no idea of the point of saving everything

My thought was this too as it came to my mind.. if anything happened to me, what good is my pictures to my family?

What would they do with them?

Maybe they would reflect on the passion you had for photography and the places and people you enjoyed to photograph? Im only guessing of cause.

I tend to keep a large majority of my pictures, when Im gone they can do whatever they like with them or simply format my drives and fill it with music..

heheh! Let's hope not..

I guess its why I scrapbook for the memories of it.. instead of just pictures on a disk, I also journal along side of those pictures and I been using a packet called project life.. they have their own pockets for things, I will write what kind of a day I was having, how it was outside, the weather, why I took the picture and where it was. that way when they see an awful abstract which might have been my favorite, they knew why it was in the book.. of course they could get rid of the book anytime
