Ok so I'm finally not traveling any more and I'm going to settle myself in Orlando a while. So therefor I have no more "well I move too much to have a photography business" excuse.

SO! How do I get myself out there?

I just bought a Facebook Advert but I'm wondering if I just threw my money into a black hole.

I was also thinking about investing in prints of my artistic stuff but also promoting my portrait photography through business cards/flyers at the local farmer's market but again, not sure how successful that will be.

Any thoughts/advice? Most successful photographers I know just got there from word of mouth, having big social networks (like one military wife I know who specializes in reunion photos) but I do not have that as of yet.

how you market yourself depends on what you want to do and how committed you are to it. a "photography business" isn't a breeze-in-breeze-out affair, because there are just too, too many camera owners out there that can get photos in focus often enough to make people think they are photographers.

the people that i'm seeing succeed are the ones that commit to a particular niche. the become experts, develop a portfolio that proves their capabilities, and they seed and nurture their market, cultivating it for the long haul. whether it's food photography or portraits, corporate events or product photography, pick the thing you would enjoy the most and focus on that. in time, you will build a reputation that will generate word-of-mouth business. trying to be everything to everybody just ain't what it used to be.

the other thing about building a sustainable business is having credibility. you do all the things you're supposed to do (business license, insurance, blah-blah-blah) and incur the overhead of having a legitimate business, and you charge sustainable rates that cover all your expenses, pay you, and generate some profit. doing these things allow you to sit at the adult table, rather than leaving you squabbling for scraps at the little kids table.

or you could just take your camera downtown and offer to shoot linkedin profile shots for $10 cash. shoot and transfer to a tablet and email them on the spot...

ETA: yeah, that FB$ was probably a waste. maybe not, but time will tell.

I can say that a camp I am on the board of did a multi year buy deal on Facebook ads at the insistence of one of the board members who got us a great deal for the level of exposure yadda yadda yadda. After the run we interviewed the campers and none remembered seeing the ads and none signed up because of them. We would have been better off putting up signs on telephone poles.

Most of what I have learned about useful marketing tools I read in Guerrilla Marketing a must read for any small business person, and if you want to make money from this, you have to be a business person first and foremost.

However, even if you're not violating a local ordinance this technique can be over-used ... ;-)
