A canadian protest, you mean a peaceful sitting in which we say "we don't like that and would really appreciate you not continuing in this manner. we won't take any measure against you and understand if you are disinclined to acquiesce to our request" |

How about some sympathy for the US Treasury/taxpayer as BK shifts their "headqaurters" (and profits) out of the country to avoid paying taxes (look up "corporate inversion" for more detail)...

But wasn't Timmys owned by Wendy's for awhile? Then became Canadian again? So maybe this is just another glitch in the free-trade system.
BTW I wouldn't mind seeing the refs dressed like Hamburglar for the Timbits hockey teams....*ducking* |

Isn't it just wonderful that a corporate giant would want to move from the USA to Canada to avoid high corporate taxes and then thank us by proffering a multitude of minimum wage jobs... how is that for caring eh?

I'm just wondering if you're at all offended that your individual tax rates are so much higher and yet the corporate taxes are apparently low enough that BK is fleeing up there to avoid taxes.... |

Apparently the tax savings are minimal, and the main reason they are doing this is to appease the Canadians, after buying their iconic brand out from under them. Let's not forget that BK itself is owned by a Brazilian holding company now, so there's not a heck of a lot of Americana involved as far as I can see. Plus, they make lousy hamburgers, which is my main point of sympathy... |

I find it interesting that BK is owned by a buddy of Obama's who has encouraged the higher tax rates for corporations... and yet flew to Canada to escape them.
I don't blame him.
I'd do it, too.
There's a free market for corporations... just as there is for consumers. We shop for bargains. They shop for bargains.
We'd be stupid not to save money where we can... especially if we get the same thing for much cheaper.
What I'm wondering is WHY America lets go of $50 million in ten years in taxes by raising them so high that our corporations go elsewhere to "live"... when we could keep Burger King here by not being so hard on corporations.

Not in the least my friend... considering that all have access to medical care and relatively cheap university education.
Besides, one could always argue that low paying jobs are better than no jobs and are certainly better that job creation as invented by our varying levels of governments.

I have had the great pleasure of savouring your fantastic cuisine my friends and I am stunned that you would know that they make a lousy hamburger... unless of course you are relating second hand information.
In the realm of fast foods... can one honestly say that something would fall in the category of "GOOD"?

I would assume that as a collective people could do just that. I know that I have so far refused to purchase an IPad and other similar gadgets made in far away lands for pennies on the dollar... yet these corporations expect me to pay North American prices for them.
Sorry... not gonna happen.

Absolutely! Next time you're in California, seek out an In 'n Out Burger. Wonderful hamburgers and fries. My local A&W makes a great burger, as well. California's FULL of independently-owned Mexican fast-food places sited in premises vacated by failed mega-franchisees, and they ALL make better tacos and burritos than anything Taco Bell has ever done, plus some of them make genuinely great meals. Go to Chicago and find a storefront eatery making a classic Chicago Dog, heaven!
There's NOTHING wrong with "fast food" as a concept. Even McDonalds used to be delicious :-( I lived near one of the original Mickey D's as a teenager ("Over 10,000 Sold!" the sign said) and that was a fresh, tasty burger. Pizza-by-the-slice is a NYC institution... Food trucks nowadays are doing amazing food.
It's a great time to be a gourmand :-)

It really makes sense....
Canada still follows the Queen. Burger King must be a descendant. Does this mean BK will have Tim Horton's coffee and doughnuts? |

Jimmy Johns. It's a chain, and you get your food STUPID fast (like 30 seconds from the time you place your order fast, and never more than 2 minutes or so)..
Plus, it's arguably 'good' - not great, but good. |

I don't understand what all of the media induced hype is all about. This is minor compared to all of the companies that moved their manufacturing out of the US to other countries. There are more ways for a large corporation to save on taxes than even the IRS can keep track of so I don't really see where the beef is there.
Well, like it's said, any publicity is good publicity, even if it's bad. If people want to protest something, why don't they protest Justin Bieber escaping from Canada into the US?

I understand that paying taxes isn't fun but if every citizen and corporation in America didn't pay taxes, the middle class would be gone immediately. Paying taxes is pooling our money together to have a civilized society.
It's like the elderly couple that never had children. They still pay taxes so that children in their community can go to school. If we had to pay the full price for our children to go to school, it would kill us.
What if only the people that drive had to pay for the highway system? We'd all have a metered card and we'd be charged for every place we drive. Personally, I don't want to see that happen and I am willing to pay taxes to have a civilized society.
I live in Michigan and I'm retired and have a pension. The Governor of Michigan decided to tax pensions in order to give tax breaks to corporations. The state of Michigan just removed the Personal Property Tax for all corporations. Another tax break. Now they want to move out of the country because their taxes are too high.
Somewhere, someone is going to have to make up for these corporations getting tax breaks! Guess who that's going to be! |

... or you could cut back on your military budget, close some of those bases you have set up all over the world, cut back on the largesse provided to the rich and voila... back in the black.
