I will be traveling to Pittsburgh for a few days in October as my wife has a conference. during the day, I will be out and about so what are some good sites to see and shoot during the day?

Are there any really unique places to eat?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Great views from Mount Washington. A good restaurant up there too: Monterey Bay Fish Grotto.

(Not that I'm local or anything though...)

I've been in touch with Bob. We'll be meeting up during a few of my lunch hours the week that he's here. I hope he likes walking!

Paul, he'll actually be staying near the foot of the Mon Incline, so Mt. Washington will be a no brainer. Of course, some people (my wife) are terrified of the thing and won't set foot on it. But it's a unique Pittsburgh experience -- not many of these left in the world.

Brian, I googled the Mon incline and that looks way cool!

A nice little walk would be to go up in the Mon Incline, walk across Mount Washington, come down the Duquesne Incline, and back to Station Square...

Are there a lot of good photo ops up there during the day?

Panoramic views of the city? Yeah, you'll find something. The midday light in October isn't so bad, not to mention that the trees will be full of color. If you're feeling adventurous, we could go off the beaten path a little bit and take some winding roads back down.

Alan, I'm planning on getting together with Bob during my lunch hour a few days during that week. Don't know if your schedule can accommodate that, but it would be good to have you along. If Bob's available one evening, that might work too.

Brian and Allen, I see there is a part of town called "The South Side". Is that a pretty cool area?

Also, is it possible to get shots of old steel mills.

Personally I'm partial to the North Side, but, yes, the South Side is cool and has a lot to offer. And, technically, Staion Square is part of the South Side (or adjacent to it) so you're practically there. We can take a stroll down Carson Street one day if you like. It's the main drag through the South Side.

Steel mills? Alan might be better able to answer that. There are some up his way (Ambridge), and I think there's a furnace tour in Homestead. Either one is a bit of a drive from where you'll be staying, and Pittsburgh is notoriously hard to navigate -- especially for a newcomer. But if you have the time, look into it.

I'm sure I could meet up with you somewhere in there... when it gets close, just let me know what kind of plans you have and what opportunities might work best for you to get together... I'm always up for grabbing lunch, etc.!

Fun street shooting on the South Side.

Lots of cool old hippie shops, too.
