DOes it violate the artwork rule (or other rules) if my photograph includes a pumpkin I carved this week? What if it is a major portion of the image?

Gosh, I hope not. You certainly won't be the only one possibly taking that route. :)

The artwork rule does not apply to 3-dimensional objects EVER, You can carve a pumpkin for any challenge, regardless of the rule set. In general, the artwork rule only applies to "photorealistic" artwork:

You may include existing artwork in your entry, but photo-realistic artwork such as printed photos, monitor images or realistic illustrations must either be clearly presented as artwork or used only as a minor supporting element. Using photo-realistic artwork to simulate physical objects or backgrounds that provide the primary impact of an entry will be grounds for disqualification.

I think this may be a re-hash, but wasn't it still deemed illegal if Art had taken a photo of real 3D gears and pasted them to his head??

Yes - a photo. If he had attached actual gears it would have been fine.

This isn't a good place to be rehashing the artwork rule, probably. We have oceans of discussion of it in this thread when we were discussing changing it, and here's the discussion from AFTER we changed it and announced it. Finally, here is the long and contentious discussion that evolved from Art's DQ for putting gears in his head that lead eventually to the rewording of the rule. Note that the rule hasn't actually changed significantly in what it is trying to prohibit; it's been reworded to try and make the intent clearer.

These three ought to keep y'all occupied for a while :-) It's an incredibly difficult rule to pin down to black-and-white terms, but what we have is our best effort yet.
