Shortstuff, her nephew, and I are going to Patagonia on Friday for 16 days. We are flying to and from Punta Arenas in the south of Chili and planning to stay in hostels during our time in Patagonia. We chose to fly into Punta Arenas and rent a car instead of flying into Santiago or Buenos Aires and then driving the great distance to the best of Patagonia. While Ramona's nephew and I are willing to hike, Ramona doesn't want to do day long hikes so the five day 'W' trail is certainly out of the question. He and I might do some half day hikes here and there while she relaxes at the hostel reading her books or does some shopping. I am not sure how far north we will make it. Bariloche in the Lakes District is something that we would like to visit, but that might be further to the north than we are willing to travel, especially since there is no round trip to take and we will simply have to return via pretty much the same route that we would take to get there.

I have several questions and requests for information from those of you who have been there:

1) Besides visiting and shooting the obvious (Torres Del Paine National Park, Perito Moreno Glacier, Los Glacieres National Park, El Chalten, and the area around El Calafate), what else would you suggest that we not miss?

2) Do you have any specific locations to visit in the areas that I mentioned or in any other areas? I'm looking for great foreground subjects such as cascades in front of mountain peaks and I have been trying to locate some potential shooting opportunities by looking at Google Earth, but it isn't easy. I have seen a few awesome shots like what I have in mind and I hope to find some great shots of my own. I took a tour of the Pacific Northwest with Marc Adamus years ago and he now does tours in Patagonia. I will give him a call for some ideas as well.

3) Do you have any specific hostels that you liked and would recommend? This is a biggie for us as there seems to be quite a few to choose from.

4) Any recommended outfitters or tours for glaciers walks, ice cave walks, kayak rentals, boat tours, etc.?

5) Are the border guards really restrictive as far as bringing fruits and veggies across the border of Chili and Argentina? We expect to cross the border several times as we travel north and south. Ramona's nephew is a vegan and won't be able to enjoy the lamb and beef that Patagonia is known for (his loss ;) so he likes to stock up on fresh produce when he travels with us. I have heard that simply having an apple could result in a $200 fine at the border.

Any information, tips, and insight that anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

*knock knock* Hello. Anybody out there been to Paragonia?

Judging by the other upcoming trip in the forums, it looks like Paris must be a much more popular destination. Hasn't anybody been to Patagonia?

I have not been to either of them.

But I often get paranoia.

I've never been either, Robert. Sounds like a heck of a trip, though, and I am envious.

Absolutely! I miss the days of traveling to GTG's with DPC'ers. We have room for and would welcome a fourth person.

If you are seriously interested, we are arriving in Punta Arenas (PUQ) on Saturday, November 8th at 10:20pm and departing the same airport on Friday, November 21 at 2:00am (Yikes!)

While we are there we will be traveling by rental car and staying in economical hostels. That's how we roll: frugal and often.

If you are serious about joining us, let me know.

Sadly, I can neither join you nor can offer any insight into the region. You're probably better off asking Adamus!

Have fun, and make sure to post pictures here as well!!!
