We are planning a trip to Florida soon...we have part of it scheduled but have two extra days to fit in some fun...for my wife that means hiking and for me that means shooting (hiking too, but shooting trumps it).

My wife mentioned these three: Naples, Sanibel Island and the Everglades. But we are open to other suggestions that are less than 2 hrs from the Miami area.

What should we do? Suggestions? (BTW - We are not at all lay on the beach types.)

It's about 1 1/2 hours toward Naples from Miami. A few more miles west and you can drive the Janes Scenic Drive, on Hy 29, or walk the boardwalk at Fakahachee on Tamiami Trail.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a little more than two hours from Miami, and is a good place, with 2 1/2 miles of boardwalk in a beautiful virgin cypress swamp.

Janes is a perfect opportunity to get out into the real Everglades. The time you will be here is dry season, so the swamp will look pretty much like the photos in this link.

From the drive, you can get out and walk into the swamp at several locations. The rock road may be kind of rough, but if you aren't in a big hurry it's ok this time of year. It's the real thing, not a tourist trap sort of place.

For critter & bird shots, and something the whole family can enjoy this little tour is worth the drive up Hy 29 to Immokalee. Some of my best bird photos have been shot here.
Airboats & Alligators

Everglades Day Safari is a tour company that has an all inclusive, all day, tour that leaves Ft Lauderdale at 7:30 and is back around 5:00. The trip includes a park boat tour out of Everglades City, lunch there, a walk on the Fakahachee boardwalk, and the "Airboats & Alligators" airboat tour. It's $150/ head, but it's still a good package deal for the things that you get to do. The vans are 13 passenger vans.

We went to Florida a few years ago. Definitely take and airboat ride in the everglades, I can't remember who we went with but they were great. We also stayed a couple nights on Sanibel Island. Such a beautiful place. The beaches are amazing covered with shells, my girls had fun making tidal pools and placing all the clams, hermit crabs, ect. they found. They also have some fun local restaurants.

I've never been to Naples but my sister in law is moving there in a few weeks and I can't wait to visit. Let me know how yo like it.

Here is what the beach looks like on Sanibel, more shells than sand:

And here is one of the tidal pool the girls made. They were laughing so hard at the clams sticking their foot out and jumping:

ETA: For our trip we stayed one night on the beach in Miami, then on our way to Sanibel we stopped and did an airboat ride and drove through the everglades. We stayed 3 nights on Sanibel island then got up really early on our last day and drove to sea world. The last night we stayed at a cheap motel by the airport in Miami. We had a great time.

Great thread! The Mrs. and I are leaving for Florida next Saturday. We're going to "freestyle" it. No set plans, but we're gathering ideas of things to do. The only thing we've scheduled is the AutoTrain home the following Saturday. (we're driving down and taking the train back)
