Just wondering...

I ask because I am beginning to see a trend...and because there was no reason given.

I don't know but the thread is nearly three years old. Maybe that has something to do with it . . .

Oh, it would make sense to look at dates. That makes sense...somehow.

The thread actually started 8 years ago!

But why would it matter that it is old? Sometimes it is quite interesting to dig up old threads - why does it need to be locked?

More specifically spam-prevention.

AFAIK locking the thread doesn't keep you from searching or reading the thread, and if the subject becomes timely and relevant again just submit a ticket and it can be unlocked again.

Okay, but if it was posted to doesn't that make it 'relevant again'? So again, by your logic, why was it locked? And why was no reason given? And who locked it? Because usually when an SC locks a thread, there is a message at the end that says this thread locked, blah, blah, blah by so and so SC. And beyond that, why were all the recent posts to that thread removed? What the heck is going on here? Who is gung-ho on censorship? Why remove the recent posts - to justify locking? Something is not right here.

Not if the post is spam and not a legitimate part of the discussion by an actual site participant.

I really don't care who or what starts a post. If legitimate, useful discussion follows suit, there's no reason it should be locked.

Another solution to the problem of 'spam' responses to a thread might just be to say:

"Spam reply deleted"

And let the thread carry on as it was.

I also have problems with locking a thread when the discussion can be saved by other actions.

the last post didn't seem like spam to me. it was interesting and part of the discussion.

Agreed. We tend to have an automatic response to folks who register, resurrect an old thread, and try to give us links; it's nearly always the beginning of a spam onslaught. But in this case, on reflection we think the posting was genuine.

Well, it's not locked anymore.

Will one of you please let me know when I have permission to lock this thread? ;-)
