I personally like it, but I feel most might find it "un-interesting"....

I can not critique it as far as technical things go, there are others here that are way better than me :-)), for me this brings a depressing, solitude dark feeling, I do like the backlight and lighting on the boy.

Not sure what you mean by un-interesting? What kind of feel were you trying to get from it?

Its ok but I think that it is more of a personal to you shot, than anything else.
The green is a little too much but thats about it in my opinion.
As you know it is very hard to comment on "so so" shots.

True. During my first couple of years here on DPC, I learned the most from making myself take the time to analyze those midrange images and leave comments on why they only got a 4 or 5 from me. It is easy to wow over the great ones and not too hard to identify the major problems in the poor ones. But those in the middle are tough comments.

I can see why you like this pic. It captures a nice quiet moment for your little boy. I find the cropping a bit broad. The path on the far right does not add much context to the scene and I find my eye drawn over there to it, instead of to the subject. I also didn't realize at first what he was doing, as the book is partially hidden in shadows.

Hope that helps.

I think I'd go the other way, and crop off most of the top to just above his head. I think that would heighten the contrast between the static bench and reader and the path he could be taking, either physically or in his imagination.

Jamie, Did you try Black & White?

By all means, start cropping it and trying to "fix" it. Do that, and you'll never stop -- and you'll probably end up hating it.

I think it's a fine image -- good composition, nice light, a pleasant subject. We're not dealing with jawdropping subject matter here. A crop or adjustment this way or that isn't going to make it so. I say leave it alone.

I do like the black and white better! Thank you! Cropping helped too.

Yes, the black & white works better I think. Really nice contrast!

I have a problem with the crop. The pathway on the right leads out of the pic and away from the main subject. I think you could get rid of that (could be an interesting photo on its own?)

A square crop might be interesting

Without reading the others' comments (some may have pointed out the same issues)...
First, I can see why you would like this shot. I do too.
Observations:
1) He is too small. There's too much space around him. The shot looks like you're spying on him, rather than approaching him to get his attention or talk to him.
2) He is too dark. The brighter parts of the picture pull my eye away from him.
3) I think you could lose the gravel drive and it would help the image (crop in on the right side of the picture). It has a heavy presence that overbalances the shot to the right, and away from him.
