That the votes have not been lowered during DPL, check out 'road signs' and 'graveyards', a good chunk of great photos and one photo over 7 out of the lot, and the rest under 6.6 that doesn't seem right, I could be wrong though.

but that's on terrible topics that dpc tends to hate - wait to see feathers before you make the call

I will wait, but pretty sure the same thing is happening judging by the scores thread :)

I agree. I felt from the beginning that Road Signs and Graveyards would be low scoring challenges, and I agree that Feathers and probably Pastel will be high scoring. In general, DPC likes pretty :)

Anita, what's your POINT? Seriously? Even if it's true, the only thing that really matters is where you rank in the continuum, not the arbitrary numbers that place you there.

I like arbitrary numbers :)

I was wondering how many of the top 10 were DPL members. (Too lazy to look up each person.) This is not a complaint, just curiosity about how much having a team helps. Even though I did not have time to participate, I am enjoying the increase in, and quality of, entries.

All of them. It would be a surprise if it were otherwise, since practically every active DPCer seems to have joined the DPL.

I've had my differences with Anita but I have to agree with her on this, my whole team is noticing the same thing. We're enjoying our team dynamic and learning from each other, and for that I'm grateful. However it is undeniable imo that voters are being brutal with the scores in the first few challenges. I won't rehash whats already been talked about in other threads but I'm starting to think that I will be sitting out subsequent seasons.

Its human nature.

My friend on the left helps too.

And another VERY smart move would be for DPC to remove the "Average vote received" for photographers and only show their "Average Placement" and using the percentiles. Treat the site like the DPL in that regard.

Since the numbers are arbitrary and meaningless compared one voter to another and one challenge to another.

I entered a couple of challenges during DPL1 as an independent and received a couple of my lowest scores ever. I stayed out of the challenges during DPL2 all together because of the perceived harsher judging and I didn't like competing against a team of collaborators. I broke my update button addiction during DPL2 and now only enter if the challenge coincides with what I am shooting at the time.

DPL may bring old timers back for a "visit" and increase the number of challenge entries during the competition but the bump in activity generally returns to normal once it is over. What long term affect DPL has on membership because it gives the teams a built in advantage is hard to say.

True!

I believe my voting style is the same now as always, and is not higher or lower on DPL challenges. Guess there is no way to know for sure, but I am enjoying the quality of some of the entries.

The update button is more of a "fun" game. A site feature. Meaningless in the scope but it gives hope, or not. Knowing only just your placement during voting could turn out just the same, or worse. You can get a 6.2 one time and be in the top 90%s, and feel relaxed. A 6.2 in another challenge could be in the 60s. Knowing where you are in the ladder will impact voting just as much, if not more or less, the same. I mean if voters are subconsciously voting lower because of scores, they'll vote lower knowing they're placing low as well. What's the fun sitting at a steady 1% or 100% for that matter. Some real stats:

6.1119 58%

6.0441 95%

5.8734 89%

Bear makes a good point,it is all statistically relative, yet it wears on the psyche to have a "negativity" infused in voting and commenting. Yet on the bright side, the side competitions and such well outweigh some petty gamesmanship and down voting, perhaps.

Sitting on a 4.1 does indeed wear. Enough so that thoughts of discontinuing have crossed my mind. Yes, I normally score poorly, but 5.0-5.4ish. Not 4.1.

You misunderstand (or I wasn't clear more likely)

Not for the voting during a challenge. I meant the aggregate tally that shows on our profile. Average vote received means nothing. But average placement is a bigger deal.

Did anyone notice that in the Graveyards challenge, the majority (even the great majority, I would say, but I didn't go through EVERY image looking at this) of the entries had higher average scores from the participants than from the non-participants? Isn't the reverse usually true? And if most active members are participating in the league and they also account for the majority of the voters, doesn't this mean that league members probably gave these images (on the whole!) higher scores than non-league members did?

Now that's weird, I was just looking at that myself. Am sure somebody is collating these sorts of stats and can say (with authority) that whilst the average vote may be down slightly it's not the DPL'ers that are doing it.

You can look at the highest scorers and say votes are lower, but if you look at the average vote given in the challenge it is just about normal. Challenge subjects will often effect the top scores and the average and for me the 127th shot of a grave was pretty hard to keep voting on, ditto for traffic signs. What I see is two challenges where the restriction of the subject matter was a huge determinant of the type of image submitted, and almost all the images fit the challenge and but the subject was not too exciting, so we have very few very high scores, and very few very low scores.

The fact that people are not complaining that DPL is inflating scores of the lower end of the spectrum is not a surprise, but that complaint would be just as valid.

I noticed this right away, but the Road Sign challenge was the normal way of participants voting lower.
