i just picked this this thing up for amazon for less than $20.

its a 24"x36" softbox (they have other sizes).

this thing folds up and like and umbrella and attaches to a flash bracket like an umbrella. if you are a strobist go pick up one or two of these things. i took some test shots with it and it works great. I'm going to give it a solid run through this week but i expect it to perform just fine.

i may even pick up some more and sell off my PLMs but the size may be too small for strobes.

I do like the design, and you certainly can't argue with the price! I'd be interested in seeing test shots.

Wow. Under $20. I think I'll give them a try.

Um... what's PLM?

thanks for the impulse buy! =) I had a mini version of one of these (fit in a lap-top sleeve of a backpack) that had no internal support so it kept collapsing when on the speedlight. This should be a nice replacement.

I had one of those. First good wind it got into was the end of it.

Just FYI - these do NOT do well in windy conditions.

Replaced it with this one - much sturdier.

+1

btw, the listing indicates there are only 2 left in stock right now. Amazon should give Mike a commission.

Here is a $19 softbox umbrellas that works the same way. I have a couple of these and having my flash units outside the umbrella makes it easier to adjust the power setting.

I even made a DIY horizontal flash holder to remove the stress between my radio trigger and the base of the flash unit.

I got a couple of slightly larger softboxes (same brand) last Christmas. But they were the regular variety with a Bowens mount, and I use the S-Type adapters to mount a speedlight in them. I think they work great, and they are quite sturdy. I figured I would upgrade to studio lights one day and I could still use them. This is a little more expensive though, as the adapters are in extra cost.

I did get an octobox though, that is really designed for speedlights only, which are much more similar to the OP's softboxes. It isn't nearly as sturdy, but is pretty handy and much more mobile.
