I have a friend with a problem with a Nikon 55-300mm lens. He says it is loose when mounted on the body. Can someone tell me where he should have it repaired?

Where does he live? I take my gear to the local Nikon repair.

He's in the Chicago area.

I send my broken stuff to Nikon in Melville, NY, through Nikon's website.

I've been happy with the price and turnaround.

I had that same problem with a Tamron. Could never get a solution. I traded it in. Otherwise my choice would be Nikon in Melville as well.

Duct tape. Black instead of gray, for aesthetics.

Those plastic mounting rings on the cheap DX lenses can get loose over time. They might be able to find a shop in Chicago that will replace the ring with a metal one if it's out of warranty.

A 55-300 will likely be more expensive to fix than it would cost to buy another on the used market. Nikon won't sell parts to other repair shops, sounless a repair shop has back stock of the exact part he needs, he'll be SOL.

This is one of the reasons I'm not buying any more Nikon gear.

Super glue, it's best fix to he problem and holds len's in place. I have did this many, many times.

Ask your local photography equipment stores, many of them have in house repairs or will give you a recommendation who can do repairs locally or the best way to fix it...trash, local repair, send to Nikon. My shop here is excellent - I just recently had a lens and a small repair on my camera body done. The guy was impressive to say the least...not olny did he remove the haze/fungus on a lens but fixed a broken spring on the camera mount and gave it a through cleaning.
